Fishythank you, at least I am not the only one who has done thiswell not quite this, but something similar I won't admit how many times I've flooded my apartment, but let's be happy to say my landlady would have a cow if she knew Take my advice, pull out mom's carpet cleaner, put a cup of bleach in some warm water, and first suck up what is left, then spray, suck, spray, suck a few times till it's as dry as the cleaner will get it...otherwise you'll end up with a funky smell in a few days...clean it up, and put everything away, and maybe mom won't find outgood luckheidi

It happens. I was in a LFS and had to take out the siphon for them cause they were to about 3" of water and no one was around. That tank had a 6" reticulated Pim. Just develop MTS and you will not have to worry about that again. You will go from tank 1 to tank 2 and 3 and .......... Glad your fish are fine.

yea, sadly, she JUST shampoed my carpets and then took the machine back

so, even if i had told her, it would have been too late, because she had to have it back before 2:00 and it happened at around 1:50 it still squishes under foot (YUK!) but the towels are spent, and i have blisters from wringing them out the one on my thumb burst (ouchies) but im gunna think up and excuse as to why after she just did laundry there are 6 soaking wet towels to be washed...(gunna be more after they go to bed) and i still have to finish refilling the tank, checking how damaged the filter is (its not even mine its the science teacher's..) so i hope its fine and i have a mid term exam for summer school tomorrow (wow that came up quick) but now all i need is another spawn to cheer me up but i dont think the corys are happy enough, i have too many betta fry as it is atm...maybe the rams will please me lol ...yea

but the carpet is squishy wet and the water i pulled is mudd puddle brown (apparently the shampoer dident do as good a job as it should have because my water was clear)...oh, can u vacume wet carpet? i wonder if that would help to pull it from the foam, so i could soak it up again, but i think i got 1-1.5 gallons from the carpet, and poured in aprox 3, so im still missing... like 5 gallons *faints* its gunna be a long night

My condolences. Is there any chance you can wash and dry the towels while your parents are sleep without them knowing it? I do hope you will be able to get most of the water out of your rug and finish filling up your tank. Any old blankets you can use as a sponge? If you step on a dry towel that you have laid over the wet spot, it will take up the water pretty well.

Oh fishy honey don't use a regular vaccumethat would be dangerousAs pugperson said pull out an old blanket, or comforterdoes your blanket need washing by chance? Fold it to fit the area in question, put it on it and walk, sit, roll, backa and forth...I know I have a quilt that is now known as the sop-it-up quiltand no the vaccume didn't do as well as it was supposed to if the water coming up was brownThen again I've cleaned mine in the bedroom more times than i can count and it still comes up really funky, so sometimes it can take a lot...best of uluck honey, my thoughts will be with you tonight *hugs* heidi

My mom manages apartments and owns a carpet shampooer. I can't count how many times it's saved my life I hook the tube for my gravel vac to an adapter that runs the water through a small filter. It doesn't help much but it softens the water a little. Then into my 5g buckets. Except it takes half an hour to fill a bucket so with filling 3 buckets I tend to forget one. One time.. 4hrs or so later... water was headed down the hallway and there was 2" standing in the bathroom. The problem with that is the a/c vent is less than 2" above the bathroom floor. Whatever didn't soak the carpet was running down the vent system and dripping onto the floor downstairs. I would have had no more tanks if I didn't get that cleaned up before my mom got home. Everyone still wonders why a ceiling tile downstairs fell apart from water damage. That smell also lasts for months if you soak a whole room.

Try some Fabreeze on the rug. It might help, don't add any perfumes.

From a very LARGE personal experience... if the spill was on carpeting with a foam pad, you will need to lift the carpet and remove the foam pad. With the carpet pulled back, you will need to spray the bleach solution of the underside of the carpet and the base flooring. You should then use fans to move air and allow the flooring and carpet to dry, a period of 3 to 5 days! After that you can replace the foam pad and relay the carpet.

The problem that you face is that any moisture left in the foam pad or floor will create a substantial mold problem. That is, you are baiting the area for an outbreak of black mold - not covered by your homeowners or renters insurance. The good news is that your insurance may cover the spill. Mine did, in the fine print under acts of stupidity!
