African Dwarf Frog,
my dorm neighbor and I bought frogs wed of this week and the person at petco didn't give that much info about them.

Sara has a 10 gal tank w/ 2 catfish 3 red eyed tetras and one suckerfish. With filter and bubbler running along the bottom and plastic ornaments and plastic plants.
I have a one gal tank with one betta and an underground filter and two live plants.

1st question she bought algae waffers made by hikari tropical for the frogs I read that you should only put in the tank what they can eat in 30 mins but I haven't seen either one eat, actually my betta seems to like my frogs food in my tank.
2nd question anything else we should know about these frogs or any advice from experience would be great.
Thank You
BL

The frogs should be fine in both of your tanks, but they are carnivores, and will probably not be interested in alge wafers at all. Try a sinking pellet food, instead.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I have never heard of giving algae waffers to a frog - somehow that sounds wrong?
Here are some websites to check out on frogs:
http://www.petfish.net/afrogs.htm
http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/mypets/dwarfs.html
http://mike-edwardes.members.beeb.net/Amphibiary/Hymenochirus.html
I hope this helps.

From what I've heard, frogs don't mix well in a fish tank. It's better to have a species tank of them, or mix them with other inverts. If they dont seem to be doing well, you might want to consider moving them to a small tank by themselves.

Thank You for the sites yeah I figured they were Carnivorous, I think that means the ppl at PETCO need to teach their staff better.
Peace,

Yup its worse than that too, cos not only do they need meaty foods and insect larvae, but they prefer them live too.

Basically in every respect its a normal frog, except that it never surfaces to breed and it lives an entirely aquatic existence. Add to that its small size and its on the menu for most fish, and the fish that are too small to eat it may actually become prey for it. They are also secretive and prefer dimly lit tanks ,the brightly lit tanks of most aquarists will not suit them.

Really dwarf frogs should be sold in herpetological shops rather than fish shops where the experience of the clientele is more likely to be relevant. Dwarf frogs are not good additions to community tanks, and do better in large, deep, paludaria with other animals apart from fish.

Ive seen some beautiful setups with anoles of day geckos in the dry portion and just plants and dwarf frogs below.

My cat quite likes algae wafers, but never heard of a frog eating them .lol.

Having said that- on the poking front- dwarf frogs will pretend to be dead and not move when poked sometimes. Be sure before you bin him!
