Hi there we have a new member. Her name is Angela, login is aparker...she is another teacher here and teaches PPCD, which is PreK kind of...

Anyways she has a problem:

She has a beta that she recently moved from a bowl (way to go Angela), to a 10 gallon tank...

Today she went to the lfs in town and she bought:
1--irridescent shark
2--gold barbs

Are these compatible?

What do ya'll suggest?

Heidi and Angela

The gold barbs are lovely fish and should be compatible with the betta, although in a couple of weeks (the tank is cycled, right?) I'd add a few more.

The ID shark is a problem. A (please excuse the pun) BIG problem indeed.

First, welcome to the site.

Second Irridescent sharks are one of a number of fish that should not be sold in LFS's. They gain lenghts of 4+feet and are often caught as sport fish. Take it back, and while you're @it give the LFS a piece of your mind for selling fish that need a few thousand gallon tanks to people that don't know any better. Sadly ID sharks are some of the common errors we see here on the site.

Second, The gold barbs will be okay in the 10 for now, however like all barbs they are schooling fish and will need a larger group (6+ would be nice) and a much larger tank. While not nearly as active as rosy barbs, or nippy as tiger barbs they will need more room than the 10 gallon. I've never kept the gold barbs I do have with a betta but have never noticed any nipping on the other fish. It may do alright ...for now. The two fish (bettas and barbs) like different types of water as well. Bettas perfering slow to no water movement, barbs being known to frolic in the outflow of a powerhead just for giggles.... if fish can giggle anyway .

Well, we turned the "small problem" and she got her store credit...Then she turned into a kid in a candy store!!! Angela you are great! And folks she has a full blown case of MFS (multi fish syndrome) But everyone she was good she listend to my advice and didn't listen to the guy; who was saying go for it a goldfish and a beta in one tank is great! She is going to wait till either tomorrow and come to petsmart or go back to the lfs with her store credit on monday.

But, I must admit what she wanted in the tank would be awsome if they could (They can't survive though):

Clown fish, Betta, Goldfish, gold barbs, some cichlids, oscars, and I forget what else...cool tank, but folks it is a no go:%)

So folks that is the update...the small problem has been returned to the lfs...Heidi
