I've read over and over again that only 2 - 3 fish should be added at a time. Does this apply to so-called schooling fish as well? I wanted to add 6 Von Rio Tetras to my 10-gallon tank which currently has no other fish. It seems like they would fare best if I added all 6 at the same time since everything I've read says the fish get stressed when kept in small numbers. Any advice?

I would add all 6 of them together.

Since most schooling fish are small, they do not impact the bio-load of a tank as much as larger fish, even in groups. You should have no problem adding 6 tetras all at once, however, you may want to keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrates, as it could take a few days for the bacterial colony to catch up with the new residents.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Is the tank cycled? many species of tetras don't do well in a cycling tank.

kowar100,

It that the tank with the algae problem? If so then fix that one first.

With regards to adding 6 at a time. The Von Rio are small fish and you should be fine, IF the tank is fully cycled.

divertran and LITTLE_FISH (and everyone else):

Thanks for the advice!

Yes, the tank is fully cycled.

And the algae has been taken care of. The dying plant was removed. The glass has been scrubbed.

Thanks again!
