Just curious about the feeding habits of the African Butterfly Fish. Mine will only eat live crickets. He totally ignores flake and bloodworms. I am feeding him one every evening, is that too much? Any advice would be good... Thanks

that sounds good, if u are willing to give him live crickets everyday, is he small or big, for a big i would maybe give him two.(two small crickets anyway.)

i find mine will eat normal fish food pellets.. as long as they float past him.. he will never go to the food.. which is the same as when i feed him crickets.. just plain lazy

i find if i feed him too many crickets he gets tired of them and has even regurgitated them.. which isnt a pretty sight!

As far as the size ... i think he is probably fully grown, i'm not sure, he is rather large. I have put up to three crickets in there at one time and he will never eat more than two so the other fish get the remainders. He seems happy enough and yes it can be bothersome some evenings trying to find a cricket especially if its a bit chilly! However, it keeps my three boys occupied for a short time ...

Maybe earthworm flakes would be tempting..
The smell of 'worm' speaks to many fish.

Insect larvae, wingless fruit flies, washed and finely chopped earthworm or shrimp.

Try adding a little garlic to your flakes as an appetite stimulator.

The Amazon Nut...

Thanks for giving me some alternatives, I guess eating the same thing every day wouldn't be very exciting. I never thought of insect larvae ... so mozzie wrigglers would be ok then? Earthworm flakes sound interesting as well although he seems to ignore flake altogether, and as for chopped up, washed earthworms, good job for the kids!!

Will definately give it a go. Thanks again, everyone is so knowledgable and helpful.
