It sort of depends on the size/potential size of the plecos, since "dwarf" is a relative term. Sorry for being a pain in the butt.

Since you really don't have any top-dwelling fish (besides that angel), I'd say eight or nine hatchets would be doable. You've got plenty of plants in there, and a nice filter.

Yeah, as long as you're there to catch the fish, you'll be able to scoop them back up. It's them jumping out when you're out of the house that is a real problem! I doubt you'll have a problem anyway, as chances are that they won't be jumping at the exact same moment you're cleaning the tank.

I've never had a problem with water change time. I don't take the whole lid off my 75G, though. The only instance where opening the top has been trouble was a few weeks ago when I was on vacation my lone hatchet jumped right out of the tank when my sister was feeding them. She scooped him up fast and got him right back in the water so he's fine.

With Hachets, since they go airborne, what do you do when changing water and taking the top of the tank off.

As Cichlids they are peaceful, but when they are breeding, they chase every fish that comes near them.

"As mentioned above..they like to pretend they are birds. I always enjoyed coming home to crusty fish."

This post is very important. If you do get hatchets do make sure you completely secure any holes in the lid... this is the exact reason why my small school has been reduced to one hatchet.

Also, they got long just fine with my angels that are around half dollar-silver dollar size.

Start with 6. Like sirbooks said they are pretty skittish. It sounds like a lot but they are pretty lightweight as far as waste production goes and a lot of the ones seen at pet shops are quite small. Just feed lightly for the first while and test regularly for ammonia. I would personally add some kind of bacterial additive to prevent a mini-cycle, but IMO you shouldn't have problems as long as the tank is fairly stable.

Your definitely not a pain, I appreciate your point of view.
Maybe I'll start off with 4 and then add another 4 after a month or so.

Anyone have any experience keeping a large Angelfish with a school of Hatchets. Reason I ask is my Angel is very dominant and hangs out in the top part of the water column waiting for food, which of course is where the hatchets would hang out.

Sirbooks,

Of course I would like to get at least six, maybe you could help me my current livestock in my 46g planted is:

2 Angels (Bigger than silver dollar)
2 dwarf rams
14 Cardinals
7 Rummynoses
4 dwarf plecos
4 otos

The only heavy waste producers are the Angels and maybe the plecos.

All my parmeters are excellent, nh3, nh2 zero, ph around 6.8. I also have an eheim ecco canister filter rated up to 80 U.S Gallons

How many hatchets do you think I could do?

I had hatchets a long time ago. As mentioned above..they like to pretend they are birds. I always enjoyed coming home to crusty fish.

The two most commonly seen hatchetfish are the silver hatchets (Gasteropelecus sternicla) and the marbled hatchets (Carnegiella strigata). For looks I prefer the marbled hatchets, but the silvers grow a little larger and are somewhat hardier. You shouldn't have a problem locating either of these fish near you.

By the way, how many hatchetfish do you plan to keep in your "small school"? I ask because these fish can be really timid, and do need to be kept in good-sized groups. No less than six fish are recommended, though at least eight would be better for them.

The hatchets should be fine with the angels but make sure you have a tight cover cause hatchets like to pretend to be birds

The hatchets should do fine. Though they may not get tons of the larger flakes, they should be able to snatch plenty of food from your angel...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

IMO they'll hang out fine together. Hatchets are quite fast & they also need to stay in schools.
