Hello, we bought this fish as an "African Goby" several months ago for my son's tank. I've not been able to find much info on them but now it is getting pretty big and does not really look like a goby to me... Anyway, I have posted a pic below, hopefully someone can tell me what it is or at least confirm that it is an African Goby.

Thank you!

Do a search on Google for it. I did and saw something called "West African Sleeper Gobby". If the pic I saw on google is the same named fish they are not similar. A better pic may be needed also.

Did you ever confirm its identity?

It looks like some kind of Gudgeon. Try looking [link=here]http://www.fishbase.org/identification/specieslist.cfm?famcode=404&areacode=" style="COLOR: #FFFFFF[/link].

To me, your picture looks rather like a washed out version of Tateurndina ocellicauda , the Peacock Gudgeon. At least, from a quick comparison with Cory_Addict's link above.

Thanks for the link...

I can tell you it is definetly not a peacock gudgeon. The gobies, morgundas and gudgeons do look like they are similuar in a lot of ways. I did not see any of the fish on the link provided however that really actually fits my supposed "west african sleeper goby". Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Thank you everyone for your input!

Edit: I thought I'd add another photo or two....

Ah, North American native species; my specialty. It is a species of dormitator. Be careful, as most species reach at least 8”, are reasonably predatory, and prefer brackish conditions.

That larger adipose fin has been bothering me. Now I'm thinking it could be a bantanga sp.

Thanks noodles! The closest thing I have been able to find is the Dormitator lebretonis. There are not a lot of pics either way that I can find. Thanks so much for your input!

Definitely not. Perches and gobiids are completely different. The markings are definitely of a sleeper of some sort.
