barthog1![]() Fingerling Posts: 38 Kudos: 44 Votes: 25 Registered: 16-Apr-2005 ![]() | Hi, Guys, As a recent addition to Fish Profiles, let me congratulate you all on a most informative and helpful site. I look forward to picking the brains of the vast wealth of experience out there and throwing my own comments in for what they are worth. I have a 1200 x 500 x 300 community tank setup with the following stock; 9 neon tetras 2 angels 1 dwarf gourami 1 bala hark 2 mollies 2 Platy's 4 Male guppies Filtration is by way of a Jebo 836 external cannister (I havent read too much about these but it was reccommended by my lfs and seems to be going fine) I also have 6 peppered corys currently in a quarantine tank which I plan to add to the community in a few weeks, barring any disasters. Can anyone see any problems which may arise? (aside from 1 bala shark getting too big that is....) Look forward to the feedback! |

Depending on the genders of the mollies and platies, you may need another female, unless they're all the same, then you should be fine, unless you want breeding to happen. It's good to have 1 male to 2 females to decrease aggression from the male trying to breed. Another thing I saw, the angelfish may try to eat your neons. Neons are the natural prey of angelfish. This may or not happen, as lots of people have had no problems at all with it. I'd just keep an eye open for that. I don't know how large that tank is...so no comment about that. |

Yes the 1 bala hark or often called Silver Shark in Aust would prefer to be in a school and when they get bigger which the can with plenty of a good mixed diet they are a please to have. 9 neon tetras 2 angels As stated the Angles will like the Neons very much thank you it will depend on the Angles if they are small no problem yet but when they get bigger By By Neons. Also they will enjoy the live food if the Live Bearers start having babies. Jebo 836 external cannister With that canister do a monthly full maintainence including cleaning the impellar and you will find it will work a lot better and last longer. Many will say this is not necessary but is preventive maintainence not a costly repair job. Where in OZ are you? The information that came with it was pretty much non-existent. I forgot to mention that within 3 weeks of setting my tank up one of the mollies gave birth. I managed to save 9 fry which are now in a floating breeding tank. I think the same fish has given birth again recently. After sighting 2 babies a week ago I have not seen any since. What are people's thoughts on natural attrition or survival of the fittest?? - ie letting the fry fend for themselves? My angels are still quite small so I am guessing I have a while with the neons before new arrangements need to be made. By the way I am located in Newcastle, NSW. |

Survival of the fittest is natures way of keeping the species strong by culling them. It also provides food up the chain. But in a home aquarium it is up to the individual and it is their choice. I dont have any live bearers in my tank so I dont come across that problem of choice. I've found both angels and gouramis to be very good at taking care of them. Often times the parents will eat the fry as well. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
