I was recently told by someone that they have a
"Golden Siamese Algae Eater" that only grows to about 4 inches. He has it in a 10g tank and swears its fine there.
He says it is not a CAE. Personally I think he has a
golden CAE and is just BS'ing.
He is trying to say SAE's grow to 4 inches and are fine alone in a 10g tank fully stocked with 12 neons and a paradise fish.

Well, if it's a Golden CAE, then it will outgrow the 10 gal. tank very soon.

Well...if it's compleatly unmarked then it's a Golden CAE, and yes...will outgrow and start munching slime within a short time period. If he purchased it from a chain store I've noticed they frequently mislabel fish which sure doesnt' help newbies in the hobby !

I am mostly wondering, is there such a fish as
a Golden Siamese Algae Eater?

I think I've seen albino ones in one of the stores here:%), which some stores would probably mark as golden (hey if it's golden it'll sell ).

Cant remember for sure if it was SAE or flying foxes.

Well there you go ! The answer to all your questions lie in that statement. Anybody who can make a statement like that has a bad case of verbal diarrhoea and anything he says should be taken with extremely large portions of sodium chloride.

No such thing as an albino SAE.

Really, bensaf? I thought every animal had the possibility of throwing an albino every so often. Sure, it might not be a forced strain of albinoism, like albino cories, but surely you can't say there's NO albino of a species, can you? Hmm... interesting item for debate.

Mmm, If there was that rare albino SAE, it probably would cost a bit more than what a beginner with a 10 gallon would pay for.

There's a difference between the occassional albino mutation popping up and the specific breeding of fish with that coloration, such as the golden CAE or albino cory et al.

SAE's are not commonly available because they have not been successfully bred in captivity, at least not in sufficient demand to meet the market requirement. Therefore specifically breeding a color variation of the SAE is extremely unlikely. Almost as unlikely as an LFS somewhere having a tank full wild color mutated SAE's. And even more unlikely then 12 neons, a paradise fish and a golden whatever in a 10 gal being a properly stocked tank.

Seeing as SAE's and CAE's and Flying Foxes are routinely mislabelled and identified with every kind of ridiculous name under the sun, even more so then they are correctly identified, what do you think are the odds that the guy in question has a Golden CAE ?

By saying there is no such thing as an albino SAE, I meant not something that would be on sale in an LFS, there may be a couple lurking in a stream somewhere in Thailand getting teased by the other SAE's - who knows.

There are such fish as albino SAEs. Whther or not they have been bred into the hobby is an entirely different story. As previously stated, they are not captively spawned, and considering his apparent lack of understanding in regards to ten gallon stocking, I would say that he hasn't the slightest clue what he's talking about.
