use 2 nets. use one big giant one and another smaller one to chase them into the big net... works like a charm.

After a week trying to catch the fish, you'll become an expert.

actually i learned last week from a guy at a lfs, that its best to move in slowly with the net and catch them. but then again this was with a small catfish

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction

Use a green net with a decent sized mesh, not one of those really tight small holed white ones. The fish's lateral line picks up the small pressure wave in front of the net, so they will bolt.

Try and go slow, and get behind them, they have less of a chance of fleeing that way.

The only way is to practice as nnataliee said, and you'll get better.

Move slowly and steadily using two nets. As time progresses you will learn what kind of movement stimulates certain fish to panic, and their typical flight pattern.Sometimes you can exploit a flight response by using one net to ward and the other to catch, it depends on the fish.Personall I find using a slightly over large net and trapping the fish against the glass quite easy.Once its trapped against the glass, all you need to do is use your other hand to close off the net opening (hence the need for a large or "long " net.)I know a guy who is so good catching fish with a bag that he actually uses it like a large predator fish's mouth and uses the suction from opening his fingers to suck fish into the bag.Hes one of those scary people that can catch flies with his bare hands tho..

Some fish see nets more clearly than bags , and some fish are heavily reliant on information from their lateral line sensors, so youll have to learn which is which. Ive often found distracting them with food can be helpful.

It really depends on the type of fish. I had to catch some african cichlids at work on sunday and they things are so dang smart! They used the heater and filter like it was their job! I found that using a smaller net with bigger holes worked for me. Good luck and just keep practicing. The trick is to just keep your cool.
