Hi,

has anyone ever used Ammo Lock 2 by manufactured by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals ? Here is it what it promises.

Instantly detoxifies ammonia from fish waste, tap water, uneaten fish food, decomposing plants, and algae. Prepares tap water for plants and fish.

Removes chlorine and chloramines from tap and well water.
Eliminates ammonia stress and promotes healthy gill function.

Anyone got any views ??

Im not to big on that stuff, if your tank is cycling properly or past the cycling stage then you shouldnt have to use chemicals becuase the bacteria removes the ammonia for you.

I used it years ago... after you use it you get false ammonia readings due to the ammonia still being there. I prefer a more natural way. If you have ammonia... gravel vac, water changes and an air stone.

as others said...its better to let the bacteria do its work...the less chemical u put in ur tank..the better for the residents...both flora and fauna.

Ammo-Lock is intended primarily for use in emergencies (e.g., your biological filter has crashed after a power outage has shut your filter technology off overnight). Ammonia will still be present in the aquarium, and test kits will record dangerously high levels, but the ammonia will be chemically chelated to keep most of it away from your fish. It's not intended as a substitute for a working biofilter, rather it's an emergency product intended to keep your fish alive while a crashed filter re-establishes itself.

Ideally, if you suspect a filter crash will take place because of a power outage, you should also consider teaming up the Ammo-Lock with certain ammonia absorbing plants such as Phyllanthus fluitans, which is a floating plant. If you do suffer a filter crash, you'll know because the growth rate of the plant will switch from 'fast' to 'oh my God it's staging a campaign for world domination'. You'll be removing the surplus by the kilo - literally. But, if you use Ammo-Lock as well, the plants will still perform a valuable mopping up service while your filter re-establishes itself.

I agree with Light Bright, and used to use it, but now don't even bother...get yourself some stress coat, and do a good size water change 30-50% if your levels get high, and then treat it with the stress coat to remove the Chlorine, etc...just my thoughts, heidi

I have it and have used it when I've been medicating a tank. Seemed to work well enough, but I wasnt' able to follow up on the water tests as it was used in the office tank and wasnt able to test over the weekend.
I do follow up with a water change and a dose of cycle when I feel it's necessary. It's something to have on hand, especially if you've "adopted" a tank from someone that didn't know the difference between a SW fish and a FW plant .

Zeolite isn't the most natural option but it won't give false Amonia readings because it genuenly remorves it by ion exchange there by swaping the amonia with a harmless chemical(silica) wich is actualy insouble in water and remains stuk in the filter.and i agree with hiedi stress coat is all thats needed for tap water

I use it on my bettas, it seems to keep them happier for longer than a normal chlorine remover.

Johnny the Oranda what do use to remove chlorine and chloramines at your water changes?

Callatya I use a chlorine and chloramines in my 25lt storage containers. Do you this product directly into the betta tank.

I copied this from their www site
It may answer some questions here

Ammo-Lock® FAQ
I just filled my aquarium with water. When should I treat with Ammo-Lock?
Add Ammo-Lock before you add fish and plants. It is necessary to remove chlorine and chloramines before aquatic life is placed in the aquarium.

How fast will Ammo-Lock work?
Ammo-Lock works instantly.

Can I use Ammo-Lock while my biological filter is developing?
Yes. The ammonia level will rise and fall as the biological filter forms in a new pond or at the start of each pond season. Ammo-Lock will protect the fish from ammonia while the biological filter becomes established. Ammo-Lock does not inhibit the development of the biological filter.

After adding Ammo-Lock my ammonia test kit still tests positive.
Ammo-Lock does not "remove" ammonia from the aquarium. Ammo-Lock simply makes the ammonia non-toxic to the fish. The ammonia level will drop as the biological filter consumes the ammonia.

My bottle froze this winter. Is the product still good?
Yes. A freeze and thaw will not harm the product. We recommend storing all products at room temperature, avoiding extreme heat or cold temperatures.

I do use it directly into my bottles. I push my luck with the sheer amount of glass and water I have at the moment, I think my other half would hit the roof if i suggested storage tanks!

I use it at about 2 drops/L and this doesn't really prolong the time the bettas can live in the same water, it just increases the happy-time.

Ordinarily, the WQ begins to drop on day 5, with lethargic bettas on days 6 and 7. With the ammolock, they are happy til day 8, but instead of a gradual drop-off, it slides rather dramatically into bad water on day 9.

I didn't experiment for the fun of it, I started using this when I was unable to care for my bettas for a while and I had oher people doing water changes for me.
