I read a number of articles whereby salt is used in order to treat various diseases such as ich, costia etc. But the problem which kind of salt to be used, i.e. normal table salt or salt used for marine aquariums? Any suggestions?

The salt you are talking about is called aquarium salt. Click Here Its different from both table salt and marine salt.

it is recommended to use aquarium salt for ur tank over the table salt = aquarium salt is a pure NaCl (sodium chloride) whereas, the common table salt got additives in it like calcium silicate(to avoid caking) and or iodine.

sera sea salt has other stuffs in it...trace elements and minerals.

I use rock salt, tat we get in India and use in food sometimes as we believe it to have medicinal properties. I dont think however, that rock salt would be sold loose in the US. Its about 3 mm cubes of salt that have not been iodized or treated in anyway.

Rock salt is sold in the US. I forget exactly what it's use was but my grandpa had lots of boxes from making homemade icecream. I was really little the last time he did that though so I don't remember what rock salt has to do with icecream. I've used the salt a few times but didn't really see any benefits over salt for treating ich versus using nothing but water changes for treating ich.

Kosher salt that's used for cooking or aquarium salt is usually the best, as they're not processed and contaminated, nor do they have additives.

Hi Guys,
if you use flossy salt for your Aquarium, its a purer form of salt that helps your fish. It costs about $9 Aus for a 10 kg bag. Most Aquarium Salt is this just repackaged with a flasy name, not to be confused with marine salt is different again. Flossy Salt is available from salt suppliers it is used in the pool industry as well for special set ups. Please do not use pool salt as it is very low grade and not suitable for fish. Good luck. You must use Rock Salt that you will find in salt pans near the sea.

Is it recommended to use salt in a planted aquarium or not? My tank is lightly planted although that will be changing soon, I have always put some salt in the water (aquarium salt) but have always wondered if that was bad for the plants. Or is there a safe dose for plants?

Salt stresses all plants.

Furthermore, iodine additives, despite common folklore about it's many detrimental effects, is quite harmless and is in fact utilized in many fish foods.

Hi,
Actually Rock Salt is available nearly everywhere in the
USA. It is used to melt ice on sidewalks or pavements
in the winter time, and in DIY Ice Cream makers in the
summer time. As kids we would take some of the pieces
and suck on them. Then the parents would hollar at us as
it was "dirty" and not considered "food" quality.

That's strange :%)

In India, like I said earlier, we believe that rock salt has medicinal properties and is recommended to patients with blood pressure or water retention as a replacement of regular salt. It is also used for some other purposes that I don't know much about. The only reason I don't like to use it for cooking is because the grains are more like little pebbles or rocks and don't dissolve in food easily while cooking, so parts of the dish sometimes contain lumps of salt that obviously don't taste good.

Note of caution, make sure deposits you get from local sources have been chemically analysed. Lots of salt is deposited from underground water sources, and globally more of these contain arsenic than not. In deposition sites the arsenic levels may be more concentrated than in the surrounding water table.

Evian dont charge money for nothing lol.
