I just wondered if elastic bands are poisonous to fish? I was thinking of using one to tie down some lettuce and tubifex worms. Would they affect the water? etc. Ph, GH,?

I need answers really quickly as it is feeding time very soon!

Nope... They are perfectly safe. I use them all the time.

I use them to hold down several food extras. With the lettuce I just place a large river stone on to the lettuce. I never have to remove any left overs either.

I have dropped some small pieces into the tank while cutting them off the bag when preparing to intoduce fish into the tank, and found them much later when doing the water change.

I would be extremly careful if you have large fish it could get caught around their body with bad results.

I also think that rubberbands are safe for aquarium use.

They are okay, but if left too long will degrade in the tank. Never seen a fish actually eat a bit of rubberband but seeing as I can't watch every fish every second ....
Besides that they do leave a mess in the substrate, and can end up clogging the filter....so .... They're okay to use, but remove them before they start to break up and make trouble for you .

I saw a tetra eat a chunk of rubberband. It kept turning it around in it's mouth trying to make it smaller so I tried to get it to drop it. Didn't work. It just clamped it's mouth shut so I couldn't see the piece and swam away. Eventually the tetra swallowed it and 3 weeks later I still hadn't lost any tetras. Alot of people use the bands to attach filter media to penguin cartridge frames instead of constantly buying new cartridges or having to empty the carbon out of every cartridge. The bands do have to be replaced every time the media is or they'll break down but they haven't caused any deaths that I know of.
