Gang,

Recently, mattyboombatty started to write a conclusion to his long running log where he describes his tank over almost 2/3rd of a year. Only our interference could convince him to consider a continuation, best expressed in his [link=Poll]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Planted%20Aquaria/64893.html?200510040343" style="COLOR: #ff6633[/link].

Now, as I stated in the above mentioned thread, I think it is a shame that such great pieces of work will eventually disappear into the post nirvana, never to be seen again. Mattyboombatty is not the only one who created a log, and neither are all logs solemnly concerned about planted tanks. Just to mention a few others, there is Trystianiti’s DIY CO2 log, Dr.Bonke’s planted tank log, Dan76’s DIY Mattenfilter log (just started), tetratech’s tank log, and last but not least my own tank log.

I personally think that the Administrators and Moderators of FP should consider if a log is important and if deemed so then it should be made a permanent fixture, for example as a new forum called logs or as a sticky. I think this way these logs can be very helpful for new generations of fish friends (and old ones too) and certainly would increase the appeal of our site.

Please let me know what you think by participating in this poll.

Thanks,

Ingo

Logs are the best as they show you cause and effect in one continuous thread.

There is no better learning tool on this site than logs

I for one, really enjoy the log format. It is a great educational tool. Most logs show positive and negative consequences which will enable future aquarists not to make the same mistakes.

I like them, but after a while they cease to be relevant.

I think that they should stick around for some time. It is nice to see step by step activities for peoples projects.

I think that they can be very helpful and can actually help beginners as they prevent the repetious asking of the same questions over and over, that newbys often request info on. The log on what fish can be kept in different sizes of small tanks, should be a permanent fixture!

Personally, I think logs are for firewood and telephone poles . forgive the pun, plz. Actually, I dislike them but they can be a great tool, if you need a tool. I mean, it kind depends on the purpose of the log, wether its to log what you've done in the past and how well it worked to avoid doind stuff you didn't like, or just to jot down some memories. They can also be useful tools for duplicating something someone else did, if you liked their results. I dislike them cause I think they're boring and learn better by doing stuff myself but if you like them good for you. its just an opinion.

Although I enjoy all the little day to day details that a log can bring, it probably is boring to the masses.

Maybe not a log, but a photo essay where 5 months of setup are condensed into 20 to 25 picture posts, with just the major parameters or changes listed. This might be more attractive to more people. The photo essay could be posted all at once from pictures the aquarist has taken over the that time period or the pictures can be posted every so often. Just another take on it.

I think they are great but after a awhile old logs should go away so that new ones can replace them.

Logs are interesting, but should disappear with time

How long can the same tank be interesting for? 2/3rds of a year? 5 years? I think it depends on the need for changes to be made for the tank and the authors satisfaction/dissatisfaction of the status of the tank. I noticed recently that the last 3-4 pics in my log look the same. Time to quit or make a change. I didn't really mean to stir up a bees nest or anything. I just thought it was time to throw in the towel. But I guess I left that up to the masses to decide .

The logs are interesting but as someone has already said it would be great if we could have a more condense version. My eyes tend to glaze over after reading the 25th post especially when a lot of them are just "well done, looks great" type of posts. Maybe they should be made into case studies and kept in the articles section.

I enjoy seeing how a tank, etc progresses from the beginning, and enjoy seeing what is going on at the time being

And for the most part they stay visible, you just have to know how to find it

i think there should be a log forum thats sort of like a hall of fame , we could keep putting them in the appropiate forum but once they reach a certain standard a mod could put them in a log forum where only the author could update them with more posts and pics, and if you dont like them dont look

OH TOLEEDY!
