australian "arowanas" are pretty common throughout melbourne.. jardinni and leichardi (spelling) are at most stores or available if you order them... I believe its on a seasonal basis for both varietys.. i got mine as a baby from Upmarket Aquariums last year for 100$.. they have one there that is about a year old (smaller than mine though!) now for 300$..

ps. awesome fish shop go there even if they dont have one!

Do you only get native arowanas down there? We can get baby silvers (from South America) for $10 around here, but I haven't seen any of the Australian species.

We got in an African one once. it was a really cool fish and apparently it was a filter feeder as opposed to a predator (no wonder we couldn't get it to eat anything but Cyclop-Eeze).

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

the non australian ones are on the are on the black list of imported fish.. like many others... but you can still get them around some places... starting at $800 even for regular silver asians etc... the aussie ones are the best anyway

a tip to those thinking of buying one.. i was just playing with mine.. he sorta follows my hand around.. it used to be somewhat harmless.. well he just ravaged my fingers twice when putting in food in the tank.. straight out the top onto my hand. Oh, it doesnt tickle like say a betta nipping at ya finger he literally ravaged it!

I guess he can chomp down on pinkies and cut them in half with a swoop past what could he do my hand if he felt like it!

Real arowana's are not allowed for import I think just like pirahnas. I have only seen saragota or whatever they are called, they look like them but are actually auystralian I think. I have seen ones about 15cm for about $150.

To me...arowanas are very common in Sydney. My mate just sold a huge batch (over 70) of silvers about 10cm long to the sydney market. Now there are that much silvers out there in Sydney that no one will ever buy one of them for another 6 months.

I've seen big ones, meds and babies for sale...golds, blacks, reds, blues, silvers...etc. From a few hundred to almost $100k.

Asian Arowanas are on the black list of imports, but its allowed for sale and keeping. But, there are plenty around. The silver my friend sold are around $700-$800 in the Sydney market at the moment. They also had a baby black for $800 and a baby red for $3k? well something like that.

The silver and black are south american. Silvers' latin name is Osteoglossum Bicrrhosum and are extremely large. Blacks' latin is Osteoglossum Ferreirai also is a large fish but slightly smaller than its cousin.
There are 2 Arrawanas from Austrailia the first sometimes called Northern Barramundi or Jardini, its latin name Scleropages Jardinii, a weights of 1-2 kilograms are common. The next is commonally called either spotted barramundi or Sarratoga with latin being Scleropages Leichardti normally grows to an avarage of 50 cm but can get up to 90 cm. This species being teritoral especally too others of its own kind.
Although there are many diffrant colors of Asians are a single speices Scleropages Formosus, the red color morph ussally called the red dragon, these fish comand high prices because the are listed on the CITES list and all legally exportated fish must have been implanted with a microchip with all its information. All legal fish are spawned in ponds at fish farms. When the fry reach a certian size farmers have to have an offical come to their farms and over see the implanting process. There are also limits on how many fish are exported from the farmers home country.
