It'll be fine for a while depending on the size of the barra, the sooty grunter and the tank.

What do you plan to do with your barra when it gets too big?

my barra is about 30cm. this is about my third one when they get big i give them to a resort up the road and they put them in a mote (containg lots of barra) that runs around the restraunt. it's realy good they have shows wheir they feed the barra every day.

i have tried keeping archer fish with him but they just get munched. that is why i was after somthing that can hold it's own.:88)

In the wild I have seen Barra just waiting to ambush the Archers as they went past.

matt do you want Aus natives only? Try a leichardt or silver arowana for a tank mate, assuming you have a very large tank.

Good to see you have somewhere to move the fish once they get too big.

A good sized sooty grunter or mangrove jack will be fine with a barra for a while (obviously, if they're too small you'll lose them). If the tank is too small (under 4ft) I wouldn't worry about any tank mates.
Archerfish are just expensive snacks. A lot of people use them as barra bait.

Looking for small Australian natives? Rainbowfish!!!

I love those guys, only trouble is I need a brand new aquarium to house them and at the moment money is tight ... sigh ...

... Except I didn't say above "Oh yeah, put them in with your Barra ..."

My understanding was that Matt was looking for alternative Australian natives for future keeping. I suggested one. I also suspect he knows which ones he can mix and match too.
