Tetra Fan![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1203 Kudos: 1081 Votes: 63 Registered: 11-Apr-2004 ![]() | ah well thats good news for me ethan My pH is around 7.0 so they should be fine in my tank. You are lucky to have the Rams breed in 7.6 pH and hard water, they usually breed in low pH like 6.4. They may have already been in breeding condition when you got them. Any way congratulations |

The parents have been great and are garding them for all that they are worth. It is facinating to watch I cannot seem to stay away . At the moment i was advised to feed them on Liquifry for egg bearers. this seems to be doing the trick. They are 4 days old now and the partents are putting them in their mouth and spitting them out to feed them. They keep tranfering them to different crevises that they have made, fotunatly for me this is at the front of the tank. I have only had the tank for two months and was not expecting any of this but am so pleased that this happened I hope that I get a few survivors from this batch as it will be my first ever. Could anyone tall me if at some stage I will need to seperate them from the rest of the tank, not that they are a problem for the parents. I am just worried that they will let their gard down and they will all get eaten. ![]() |

Ethan14![]() Big Fish Posts: 312 Kudos: 339 Votes: 18 Registered: 06-Jul-2005 ![]() | well i put in methalyne blue the next day. A lot of the eggs turned white... but not the fungused white. more like the unfertilized white. However, there are a few yellow ones left and they should be hatching anyday now if they do. I've heard that in harder more alkaline waters that the male has a very hard time fertilizing the eggs. from now on I'm just going to let them take their chances with the eggs in a community tank. I'm going to try to breed something that will do better in my type of water, like kribensis in a separate 10 gallon tank. it should be very interesting to watch them take care of the eggs and fry. Ethan14![]() Big Fish Posts: 312 Kudos: 339 Votes: 18 Registered: 06-Jul-2005 ![]() | well at first they swam around some and looked a little confused. But now they are back to normal. I turned off all the lights so they can sleep on it. I felt kind of bad taking away their eggs but its a better fate than having them eaten. |

I hatch them for my baby Angelfish. They eat them from day 1 of the free swimming stage. Until about 14 days old when I start weaning them onto crushed flake food Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |
Ethan14![]() Big Fish Posts: 312 Kudos: 339 Votes: 18 Registered: 06-Jul-2005 ![]() | ok i removed the rock, placed it into a tupperware container filled with water without ever removing the eggs from the water. right now they r in it with an airstone. theres plenty of bubbles coming from it but they arent strong enough to disrupt the eggs. i will try to pick up some methylene blue or pimafix tomorrow. should i do any water changes and if so how many. when they hatch what should i do? btw thanks and good luck breeding nameless theres so many bubbles on top! i cant even see the eggs the tops all foamy. should i keep it like this or remove the airstone and just let the bubbles come out of the tube? Ethan14![]() Big Fish Posts: 312 Kudos: 339 Votes: 18 Registered: 06-Jul-2005 ![]() | ok i have a pair of blue rams in my community aquarium. they have been getting rdy to breed for awhile (cleaning off rock, not letting other fish near it, male trying to lure female to rock) so anyways ive been watching them for a few minutes and the female will slowly swim across the flat rock they like and as she swims across she rubs her bottom against it. The male follows her doing the same thing. they keep repeating this. however i dont see any eggs. are they laying one egg at a time and fertilizing them? or are they just getting ready or what?! |

Once the eggs hatch it takes about 7 days for fry to become free swimming During this time you can whip up some brine shrimp eggs by using an container with an air stone and placed under a light. Just put about 10 tablespoons aquarium salt and 1 quarter teaspoon brine shrimp eggs. Place under a light fairly closely with an air stone, and then the brine shrimp hatch in about 24 hours. turn off air stone and wait 15 minutes then use a turkey baster to siphon up brine shrimp. Rinse through a peice of nylon or cheesecloth and then put the baby brine shrimp into the container with the baby fish. Cheap , quick, perfect food for baby cichlids. Ethan14![]() Big Fish Posts: 312 Kudos: 339 Votes: 18 Registered: 06-Jul-2005 ![]() | unfortunately my water ph is around 7.6 and it is fairly hard. Not the best for rams but not the worst. I'm afraid that the other fish will get to the eggs so i am going to remove them. However, i will probably try to breed the rams in another tank later. I didnt really do anything to get them to spawn. I just put them into the community tank a week ago and fed them on flakes and some freeze dried blood worms. but i heard that feeding them live food helps to get them to spawn. |
Tetra Fan![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1203 Kudos: 1081 Votes: 63 Registered: 11-Apr-2004 ![]() | Just curious, but what are your water parameters? You are so lucky to witness Rams spawning. I am thinking about getting blue rams and i want them to breed, so maybe you could share what you think you did that led up to this ![]() If you do not need/want a lot of new rams then leave the eggs in the tank and let the Rams raise them, sometimes they are successful and sometimes they arent, if you can, get a 10 gallon tank (just the tank), a small heater a fake plant or 2 and a small filter (no substrate so you can clean the tank easier). Put the rock in there the next time they spawn (usually once they start they keep going). And just take care of them from there. Well good luck |
Ethan14![]() Big Fish Posts: 312 Kudos: 339 Votes: 18 Registered: 06-Jul-2005 ![]() | i will see if i can pick up some methylene blue or pimafix tomorrow. they are still spawning. how long does it usually take? btw thanks for all the help |

Ethan14![]() Big Fish Posts: 312 Kudos: 339 Votes: 18 Registered: 06-Jul-2005 ![]() | ok they are still spawning and occasionally chasing away other fish. i have a tuperware container with an airstone rdy to go. unfortunately i dont have any methylene blue or pimafix. Is there anything i could substitute it with or any other measures i can take against fungused eggs? theres got to be over 100 eggs Last edited by Ethan14 at 14-Jul-2005 18:23 |

This will allow easy access for you. Add an air stone. Gently lift the rock up and place it inside the tupperware container egg side up. Add some methylene blue or pimafix to prevent egg fungus.
