I have well water. Do I still need to add conditioner to it? I usually just add it straight from the tap.

I make up a bucket of water (Or the amount that I need in a bucket) then add AquaPlus wter conditioner and blue crystals which are hardeners. If I am doing my 126 litre then I use a shower attatchment on my tap and fill the tank using that. I add the conditioner and crystals as I go.

I usually just add a tap water conditioner to the water bucket before I add the new water. The only time I let water sit overnight is in the winter due to the water holding more gas.

I use well water in my 20 gallon... we have a water conditioning thing in our house... don't most wells? I really don't know cause this is the first time i have lived with one... anyway, i dont really do anything special to my water and my fish do just fine.... i think it helps to use a bio-wheel though, just for nitrogen cycle's sake... and also, i have two goldfish sharing a tank witha bunch on non goldfish, and i dont have any ammonia problems either... am i off topic??

Bob,

How do the plants respond to all that changing water?
Aren't you constantly replenishing, ferts, nitrates, etc.

Keith,

A 50% water change on my 125G takes just 30 minutes with my python. The tank is a bit overstocked and I find that the water changes:

1. Maintain great water parameters,
2. Provide consistent water parameters,
3. Keep me from playing with additives,
4. Force me to pay attention to maintenance.

I use a basic gravel vac hooked to garden hose to drain the water out the front door into the yard. then to refill I use the python sink adapter and run normal tap water through the hose to fill the tanks back up. Before filling the tank I add Prime for my larger tanks (40 and up) and whatever I have lying around for my smaller tanks. This is usually Marineland or Jungle water conditioners.

oh, and I try to change 50-75% weekly.

I have well water with tons of dissolved gasses so I have to let it sit. Otherwise I'd be adding 6.8 ph water to 8.0 tank water that is so filled with gas bubbles you couldn't see into the tank. I change 10-15g on a tank every 2-3 days after the water has sat long enough. I have no chlorine or chloramine so I just grab whatever conditioner at walmart and add some to the buckets when I refill them. I think I add around half dose. My buckets are stacked in a closet with tight lids to avoid spilling 5g of water across my floor. If my tap water wasn't so different from the tank I'd add it directly with conditioner instead of storing buckets.

Am I reading your reply correctly 40%-50% basically every day.

If that is correct, are there any special reasons for doing it that way?

I have a planted discus tank. My water changes are direct from the tap with Prime as my water conditioner. Water changes are 40 to 50%, at least 5 times per week.

We have well water, too. I've been told by a couple of professional aquarists that it's worth using conditioner to bind the heavy metals -- we have a lot of iron in our water.

But there've also been extended periods when I haven't used it, and the fish did fine.

I do a water change every 10-14 days mostly.
I use a Python for water changes, and add Prime directly to the water. Prime is a great product, I buy the bottle medium size bottle and that lasts almost a year. Not bad for 20 bucks I say!
I have fairly soft water at my new place, and still add some peat to the water for extra softness. The Tetras and Discus and Angelfish and Rams love it!

I do weekly changes in all my tanks using Aqua Plus which I buy from Big Al's in 2 litre bottles. I don't really measure water changes by percentages but by the number of buckets I remove and refill

I do about 15% water change weekly. I use only tap water which I store in 2 25Lt plastic containers to this I add a conditioner to remove the chloramine. It is then stored ready for next weeks water change.

One of the main reasons for doing this if there is any white spot (ich) around it will not survive without a hoast.

The conditioner is mostly there to remove chlorine or chloramine which well water doesn't have. So you're probably fine without it. It might be worth testing your well water for heavy metals, though. If there are metals present, some water conditioners (though not all) detoxify the metals.

I know this is a really basically question, but I'm just curiuous to what most of you do for water changes.

Are you using tab water and a water conitioner or do you simply keep the water standing a few days. I fill 1 gallon jugs and use Marineland's Bio-Safe. It works out to 10 drops per gallon.

25% a week, water sits in a 40 gallon container from walmart for 48 hrs with a powerhead running to airrate it.

water change day i hook a $4 50 foot hose to a gravel vac and syphon it right out the garage door. then i take the same gravel vac, remove the tube, then place it on the powerhead and watch TV for 10 mins as the tank refills.

this method works well because at any given time i have 40 gallons of water ready to go for any reason. this is enough water to water change 3 of 4 tanks, the 4th being a betta tank.

Tap water and either genesis or Aquarium pharms tap water conditioner. I'll switch over to AP's water conditioner when genesis is gone. Both use one drop per gallon, in AP's case it does chloramine as well as the heavy metals.

I do once & sometimes twice a week water changes of approximately 30%. I use straight tap water within 1 or 2 degrees of the tanks temp using Tetra AquaSafe to treat it. I've never stored water for changes as the temp unless heated separately wouldn't be right and the idea of having all those containers of water sitting around just doesn't appeal to me.
