I think I'm going to buy a new light fixture soon, so that I'll have enough wattage per gallon to grow real greenery. Perhaps I'll use my birthday money to help out with the purchase. I don't plan to use lots of fertilizers, I may not use any whatsoever. If I do plant this tank, it won't be super-heavily planted. This would be my first planted tank, so I'd go easy on the vegetation. |

It's what I use every week. I use the water right out of the tap -- no waiting. One thing that is worth doing is checking to see how your water is treated. You can call your water utility or check on-line. I found a nice web-site for my city's water treatment that had water parameters (hardness, pH, nitrates, etc.) and also explained how they treat the water. That will help you decide whether letting it stand is "good enough" as a treatment. |

In addition, it has the lower pH that he prefers. The smaller tank I use tap water plus a conditioner, usually stress zyme. Its worked well for me. I have a large jug of it sitting around (I hide is in a closet). then I put a submersible heater it the bottle the night b4 and heat the water to the same temp as the tank, whichever I'm doing. I forget do you have a planted tank, by your fish list you probably do. Are you constantly replacing ferts, etc with all those water changes and how do you match temp. My Scapes |
M.J.![]() Fingerling Posts: 27 Kudos: 31 Votes: 0 Registered: 31-Mar-2005 ![]() | Depends on the tank. We have incredibly hard alkaline water here (think liquid rock!!!) so the Africans LOVE it -- for them I just use tap water conditioned with Seachem's Prime. I match the temp to 1-2 degrees difference. In the tank/s for fish that don't really appreciate our tap water (ie my SA's) I use a mix of distilled and tap to the appropriate PH, GH/KH, etc -- it is treated with Prime and temp matched just like the water for the other tank. EVENTUALLY I will have a R/O system to produce water for them instead of buying distilled - and I also want to set up a holding container in which I can store the RO water and have it being peat-treated in holding as well as being able to combine the tap/RO water in there and have it heated so that it is all ready and all I have to do is take it out and add it to the tank |

I change thirty percent of my tank's water twice a week, and I really don't have the space or the patience to let water sit. Besides, if one of my siblings crashed into the jug or whatever and spilled it, there would be some serious trouble. I'm not into that kind of stuff, so I stick with the conditioner. Plus, I think my area is starting to put chloramines in the tap water. That stuff doesn't evaporate, so there'd be no point in letting it sit. |
