Balas are schooling so you'd need more than 3-4. Minimum I'd start with is 6. IMO they need @a minimum 250gallons. They're active fish that grow a foot plus and need more than the average ammount of swimming room.

This topic's been covered before ... in this thread.

Oh, and if you think a 12 foot aquarium is excessive (I cited this as a reasonable choice in my first post in that thread) bear in mind Balas grow big AND are VERY active ... not to mention rocket-propelled jumpers if you don't keep them covered!

Sure!
Id get 6 Balas those. They would be fine in a 200g tank.
I know some people will argue that - but think how much better the lives of yours will be compared to the thousands of Balas that are out there in 20g tanks!

So start with your 6 balas.
They add some bottom feeders - Pictus catfish come to mind, or a couple syno cats of some type. Or a whole bunch of corys. Or plecos, or USD cats, or whatever!

Then add some small - medium size schoolers to keep the tank lively as balas though sometimes zooming around tend to be quite peaceful and swim with twitches rather than zooms
Say, a group or 2 of 20 or so small to medium schoolers like rummynose tetras, black widows, buenos aires, cardinals, neons, black neons, etc etc.
Or do a smaller school of larger fish like congo tetras.
