Hey Cali, you said that you have issuesof TFH from the 1970's, as well as I do somewhere in my boxes. Even better I have the original issues, which I believe are from 1954 or somewheres in there. I was looking for them the other day, but didn't come across them. If I get time this weekend I think I'll go looking for them again.

I have kept a subscription to TFH and AFM for too many years to remember, hundreds of mags now. I like them both. But to define them a little better, IMO, the AFM is aimed more to the beginer or in other words it covers some of the more basic things. Lots of how to and starting articles. TFH is more of an advanced mag, covering more of the hard to find fish, specialty set ups, and that sort of thing. I guess it is all in the name. One is about aquarium fish (AFM), and one is about fish for the hobbyist (TFM). Hobbyist being a little more into it than the basic fish keeper. I still learn, or re-learn stuff from the AFM. Its always good to re-read the basics sometimes.

An Australian fishkeeping magazine is my mission in life. I did make a prototype for my honours thesis last year. Now waiting for my magazine publishing company to get enough money to start it for real.

In the meantime, Brisbanites can find PFK and TFH at the GPO newsagency, near the city GPO. Can't help those in other cities, subscription is always an option but geez it's expensive (as it is PFK costs around $10 an issue, TFH even more).

My favorite is Practical Fishkeeping, but it's difficult to find and a bit expensive on this side of the Atlantic. Of the American magazines, I'm partial to TFH.

OK, can't find my previous responses to this kind of question so I'll type it all out again.

I'm subscribed to:

TFH - full color, famous for its photographs, generally runs a few Q&A columns, a few every-issue columns (like Through a Small Window for smaller tanks, the predatory fish column, and the science column, which is written by an FPer), and then some larger articles, often including a breeding report. TFH is not particularly aimed at experienced hobbyists BUT they cover such a broad range of topics somewhat shallowly that even if you know all about, say, platies, their article on rainbowfish may be extremely informative. And did I mention the incredible photos?

AFM - this magazine is largely composed of various Q&A columns. This means that, per mag, it hits many more subjects than TFH - but in much less space. They run articles, too, of course, which are usually well-written and fun to read. Also fairly shallow.

FAMA (Freshwater and Marine Aquarium Mag) - Few (and usually bad) photos, but very in-depth articles and columns. George Lucas had a long-time column in FAMA (he's moved to Flare now) which says a lot about the way FAMA attracts the best - and most scientific - minds in the fish crowd, generally. FAMA is heavily column-based, with some articles and a few Q&A columns (including "Sand Mail," which is literally pages and pages of questions about sand-bed filtering in marine tanks - no, I don't get the intriuge and complication, either).

Practical Fishkeeping - as a UK rag this runs fairly pricey but it's my favorite of the bunch. It's a big mag and it covers a quite broad range of topics every month, and some months they package in a separate marine mag. Gorgeous photos, a great mix of Q&As, columns, and articles (very big on collection articles, and "follow-ups" to those in which they create a biotope tank from that region). The main ownside is their fish shop guide. If you don't live in the UK, this is as much as 20 useless pages. I enjoy reading through them, but basically, as someone who tends to stick to the continent when she travels to Europe, it's asted paper (actually, they should consider putting those pages right in the middle so they can print UK and non-UK versions and save themselves some money, just leaving those pages and their ink out for those to whom they're of no use).

......was just_beginning kidding about starting an Australian fish magazine?

All I see in the pet section (of the newsagents) is kitten this and pony club that. Its crap.

Of all the mags Ive seen though...TFH is the one to go with. Its $17 an issue here though and that is disgusting.

Australia doesn't have their own magazine and I think it's time someone started one.

I purchse Tropical Fish Hobbyist, Practical Fishkeeping and Todays Fishkeeper (I think that's it).

Of these I find TFH the best.

I believe that TFH is pretty much international so if you can't get it a your local lfs you should be able to subscribe to it.

I like TFH best because they put my pond in it!! I recieved tons of cool equipment from all of the main fish companies also through them because I got runner up in one of their contests. It is a great mag, but I haven't ever seen the other popular one on this page so i'll have to take a look.

I read "Tropical Fish". The annual total fish issue currently out "Aquarium USA". It covers almost every kind of fish tank possible. I bought mine at my LFS.

Two British magazines I can add to the list are Practical Fishkeeping (covers everything from Koi in ponds to marine reefs) and Today's Fishkeeper (likewise broad coverage). If they're available in the States I'd recommend that you check them out.

TFH is probably the best known of the American mags, because it's available internationally. I have back numbers from the 1970s that I bought as a teenager. Another good magazine to look out for (which sometimes covers some issues in considerable scientific depth) is Tetra's Aquarium Digest International.

I have read both Aquarium Fish and Tropical Fish Hobbyist and have enjoyed features from both of them. I would suggest either getting some back issues from the library, or at the very least, buying a copy of each and seeing which one has the best sorts of articles, information, layout, etc. for your needs. Good luck with it!
