Best Food? | |
psuklinger Fingerling Posts: 31 Kudos: 12 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2006 | Hey all. I have colorful danios in my 46 gallon tank. I have 10 red, 5 orange, and 6 green danios and was wondering what would be the best thing to feed them to bring out their colors. I was going to get other types of fish, but when I went to the LFS to get some they had orange danios.... then green ones... They are very beautiful, just expensive. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome. |

As for food to bring out their color i don't know if you can feed anything to help their color because it is not natural coloring. I do know about good food thoug. If you want to feed a good food to your fish try looking at the ingredients on the label. Most contain wheat, flour and fish oils or other things. The way to tell a better food is to look for one that starts with natural ingredients like whole salmon, krill and other fresh things, that's all I feed my fish. Omega one and New life spectrum are 2 examples of food that I use. They cost more but are better for the fish. chris |

Worked with my Lemon Tetras when I had them - they ended up solid yellow! Only took about 6 weeks to colour them up nicely too Basically, variety is the spice of life. My fishes have 6 different Tetra foods, freeze dried Tubifex, Hikari wafers (or a substitute until they're back in the shops here) and intermittent live feedings of Daphnia, Bloodworm and adult Brine Shrimp (which the Panda Corys are well able to wolf down without any trouble whatsoever!). With that little lot to choose from, my fishes are pretty happy. You'll find if you use the 'colouring' regime above, along with a wide variety of other foods, then your Danios will turn into little jewels ... provided you also keep up the maintenance on the aquarium! |

The yellow and green are created from jellyfish genes and the red from a sea coral gene. As far as feeding goes variety and some of the foods mentioned should work well. I think a blue wavelength light makes them fluores more, and a blacklight at night.. but that is harmful to their eyes. As far as other fish go, just about anything will go with them as long as they don't mind their energetic lifestyle. I know they can breed and pass on some of their color with regular zebra danios, but to breed two of the different colors.. What does that mean, Bob? "Till the cows come home." Where have the cows been? |

If you breed them you get danios of that color. I haven't noticed nearly as much increase in color with color enhancers as just feeding variety. I have 2 different brands of complete flakes, brineshrimp flakes, and new life spectrum pellets all mixed together in a container and that makes up the staple of my fishs' diet. Then they also get various frozen foods; bloodworms, squid, brineshrimp, and complete foods that already have a mix of frozen ingredients with vitamins and minerals added. Occasionally they get live foods scooped out of my horse water tank. Mostly mosquito and gnat larvea with a few of the smaller water bugs. |
