There is a new monster of a book set to be released as of March 31: The Encyclopedia of Exotic Tropical Fishes for Freshwater Aquariums amazon link here by GLEN S. AXELROD, M.S., F.Z.S., and BRIAN M. SCOTT.

This one looks like it is going to be a monster, at nearly 800 pages.

Here is the product description from Amazon:

The Encyclopedia of Exotic Tropical Fishes for Freshwater Aquariums is an inspiring resource. The book is separated into two sections, with the first part encompassing six chapters of both general and specific fishkeeping information and the second part offering detailed profiles of 1000 freshwater species. All fish enthusiasts will appreciate the down-to-earth writing style and superb images by some of the world’s top photographers. This practical reference also features anatomical drawings, multiple tip boxes, and over 2800 full-color photographs.

The book has not been released yet but you can pre-order it there. I think if I were looking for something to expand my library with, it would be this one. I am definitely putting it on my "wish list." I may even order it from my university, it looks like it's going to be a great resource.

EDIT: Sorry forgot you were looking for plants as well. I saw this one on Amazon that I thought might be worth picking up: Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants amazon link by Peter Hiscock.

Product description:

This heavily illustrated volume will prove a blessing to every aquarium hobbyist who has had to settle for superficial plant descriptions in general fish-keeping books. It presents a detailed A-to-Z directory covering hundreds of aquarium plants with high quality color photos and succinct profiles of each plant. Information includes the plants common name, botanical designation, growth cycle, and general description. The books additional sections offer details on how to grow and propagate aquatic plants, and how to protect them from parasites and other problems. This handsome volume features approximately 450 color photos and illustrations.

Looks like I might have to buy that one from my university too. I'll just put them on my student card. ]

Babel, that is THE defiinitve reference on aquarium plants. Cory_Di is looking out for a copy I believe ... it's VERY in-depth and technical, and might not be sutitable for a complete beginner, as it deals with plant biochemistry also, but it is a superlative reference work, and is likely to remain THE book on the subject for the next decade.

Probably not what you were thinking of but Diana Walstaads book [link=Ecology of the Planted Aquarium]http://www.aquahobby.com/books/e_walstad1.php" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] might be one to consider....least that's what Frank always says .

[link=Good link I stumbled across]http://www.aquabotanic.com/plants_and_biological_filtration.htm" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] I believe it's been posted before though .

Aquarium Encyclopedia of Tropical Freshwater Fish by Dr. J.D. Van Ramshort ISBN 0-89586-296-4

However, not sure if it still available.

A nice small pocket book this is concise and comprehensive, and coveres a wide range of species, is Tropical Fish In Colour by Braz Walker. Of 1970s vintage, and sadly out of print at the moment. Published by Blandford Press UK, ISBN 0 7137 0535 3.

Covers around 120 species in dertail. And fits in a large pocket.

If anyone her can obtain any books by Braz Walker, they are an excellent addition to a library. And, the aforementioned Gina Sandford is a good writer too.

Hi All,
Among my collection of Aquatic Books, I have the origional
edition of Axelrod's EXOTIC TROPICAL FISHES, Looseleaf
Edition, published origionally in 1962, and again in 1971.
It is nearly a thousand pages thick and covered all the
known fish at that time. If this is an updated version
with new articles about tanks (they were metal framed,
and slate bottomed in those days) and correctly named
fish, it is an OUTSTANDING resource for the hobbiest.

For anyone who wants to know what is going on inside their
aquarium, I would highly recommend "FISH AND INVERTERBRATE
CULTURE, Water management in Closed Systems" by
Stephen H. Spotte.

Frank

Ok it is kind of goofy, and off the wall but, I'm asking anyways...

Does anyone have a really good book on Freshwater Aquarium Fish, and plants...

I've got a few that I really like, but now would like to get something that talks more specifically about the description and care of different species and all...I'd also like to have it mention plants, though I know that is pushing it...

Specifically I would like something over guppies, tetras, corries, cichlids (mbuna, and angels)....

Is there a book that would satisfy my want and need? I wouldn't mind having to buy a couple as long as I can find something...Thanks, Heidi

Just as a note amazon.com has used copies of the Innes book available as low as $1.98 U.S., again as of 7 Mar 2005. If you're interested.

Despite its age, the venerable Innes book is still a good textbook. Not least because it covers a massively diverse range of fish species, including some that have probably never been heard of by many of the Board members. Unusual Characins such as Pseudocorynopoma doriae and Corynopoma riisei, and the highly unusual killifish Cubanichthys cubensis, which is a spawning novelty. For those who have never encountered this ageing but still valuable work, here are the details:

Exotic Aquarium Fishes By William T. Innes, TFH Publications Inc., 211 W. Sylvania Avenue, Neptune City, NJ. No ISBN number available, but this web page currently offers a copy for sale at the time & date of posting (8th March 2005, 05:13).

Well, if we can get together a good list here, I'll compile it and send it to Adam. Like I said, I have a couple that I really rely on, but now want something new and more detailed...heidi

Let me assure you that there is no such thing as a goofy question when you have a bunch of animals whose well-being dfepends on your getting things right.

In the book department, let me suggest "Vierke's Aquarium Book" by Jorg Vierke (TFH Publications, 1986; translated by the Good Dr. Axelrod himself). It's shorter and cheaper than the other books mentioned above, but it's by far the most detailed shorter book on freshwater aquariums, fish and plants that I've ever seen.

A great ideal Cali. Although there is a book section it is limited and I know that you probably have a great library and many recommendations.

I think someone should fix this title.

I don't regard this question as goofy or off the wall at all. Perfectly reasonable one to ask. And, I think someone should compile a list of decent fish books and pin it somewhere so that we we can all point to it and say "Here you are, check the list" ...

I'm sure Adam could be persuaded to create an xml editable book list for us all to add books to. Alright, maybe forced to at gunpoint ...

Seriously though, I think it's an idea worth considering. And merit points to Heidi for making me think of it

Not sure if this is still in print as mine is a few years old, but it covers both fish & plants:

Aquarium Fishes of the World by Dr. Axelrod, Dr. Burgess & others.

Here's a link to amazon.com & it is still availablehttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0793804930/qid=1110248026/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-1493418-2704035
