In Calgary, there are several good LFS that have thrived despite having a Big Al's there.

...and if you are familiar with the Big Al's here, that is no surprise.

Yeah, you americans can relax. Aquarium industry is hardly a lucrative one, and it's really unlikely that the stores will corner the market where you live. For me presonally, it comes down to the closest place to my house (to reduce the time the fish are stressed in the bag), which happens to be a Big Al's store. LFS will live one, it's not the end.

In Calgary, there are several good LFS that have thrived despite having a Big Al's there. In Canada, anyway, their retail prices are higher than their on-line prices. I don't think this necessarily spells the end of the LFS in the US.

Actually the company is Canadian, but they are entering the US retail market with an american partner (Aquarium Retail Holdings.)

The store in Tamarac is going to be the Flagship store at 18,000 square feet. They plan to open franchises across the country at about 10,000 square feet.

The store in Florida is going to have a 5,000 gallon predator tank and coral reef.

The livestock display room is going have 40,000 gallons of fish and is going to be called "The Deep"

From Big Al's online: Big Al's, ‘The Aquatic Mail Order Specialist’, was originally launched as a division of Aquarium Services Ltd., Canada's largest aquarium retail chain. In business since 1975, Aquarium Services Ltd. has grown from a small service company to a chain of 20 stores across US and Canada.

So I'm assuming Canadian

Very true, each store is a franchise, so health of fish it varies from location to location. However, the advantage with Big Al's is the selection of products they offer. I do support the LFS owners, but in big cities like Toronto, there aren't too many LFS that are trustworthy for my tank. I'm curious though, does anyone know if the Big Al's company is owned by a canadian company, or american?

Does anyone live near Tamarac Florida. Big Als, the online aquaria company is opening a 18,000 sq. ft. store in Florida. I saw a pic it looks like a public aquarium, but you could buy the fish.

Big Al's is a terrific store. I only buy and trust the fish from the Big Al's aquariums near me (Toronto). I have never had any diseased fish from their stocks, a very good record!

Precisely the opposite of the one here in Calgary, but they are franchises, so each store can be very different.

The only problem is with all these big stores rollin' through, there won't be any LFS's left... it'll be like "hey, wanna go to FinTails?" "they're closed, Big Al's took all their business"

the wal mart of fish stores...
