Just as the title asks, will a Bluegill be okay in a tank with cichlids? The tank is a bit like the ponds and such in this area, and I would put some sticks and such to make a little brush pile, do you think this would work? I only have more peaceful cichlid species with 2 Severums and 2 Firemouths. I also have 4 clown loaches. Does anyone see any serious problem with this?

Well my aquarium is kept at around 76 degrees. Most of the smaller lakes reach into the 80's during the summer. This was my only reason why I thought the temperature would work out okay. Will the bluegill be okay without colder winter months?

Wow thats pretty warm for a lake. Well i think it will be ok with out the cold winters. But also it will produce a good bit of waste, so if you have good filteration, and do weekly water changes, it should do fine. I think the firemouths will be ok, but severums tend to be less aggressive, but you could try. Also how big is your tank?

IMO bluegill get way too large to be kept in most indoor tanks. Nor only is it their size but also their activity level
What size tank are we talking about?

The tank is a 75 gallon, but all the fish are small and I can just throw the bluegill back in a lake if the tank gets to crowded, but I don't think that will happen. I think I am just going to try it because I can just release it if things get to bad.

Be aware that a wild caught fish could introduce a lot of nasties to your aquarium, so if you're going to give this a try you may want to quarantine the bluegill for a while. Also, bluegill's can have a nasty disposition so keep a close watch on him at first.

Ok, thanks for the tip on the qt. I have a 10g I will keep him in for a few weeks. My plan right now is to take a small one when I go fishing, one that is around 3-4 inches and observe it for a while and moniter it carefully. I will release it back into a pond or lake whenever it is necesary.

imo a bluegill would probably be too aggressive for a tank of smaller cichlids. believe it or not they can be extremely tempermental and territorial.

How large do they get?
The largest I've ever seen bluegill at was about 5". I've always thought that was their max size.
