Well, Considering the price they want for them in the LFS here is usually around 15.00 USD here for them, I would say you are getting a sweet deal. [qoute]This rainbow fish need some plants..what plants is the best to have in my 75g tank?[/qoute] Depending on what type of light you have, you could have many different types of plants. Some good easy plants that like low-medium light and that the rainbows would like are: Ambulia (limnophilia aquatica/ sessiflora) Wisteria Anubias of any type Hornwort Dwarf Lotus Cabomba Amazon Sword Jungle Vallisneria (also called americana) Spiral Vallisneria (or corkscrew) [qoute]I have in my tank for the moment, zebra danios, pleco, hoplo catfish, elephantfish and some mollies. Will the rainbow fish be ok with some green tiger barbs?[/qoute] Rainbowfish are pretty tough and quick fish, and these ones grow quite large (5-6 inches), and will be fine with tiger barbs, and with your other fish. They are mostly mid/top water swimmers. They are tolerant of any water conditions and not very susceptible to diseases of any type, not even ick. No long acclimation is required. Awesome choice Robby! Good luck! Do you know whether they are male or female? Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

In terms of plants: My experience with rainbowfish (and I've kept bosemanis and red irians for a couple of years now) is that they particularly don't care whether they're real plants or fake plants -- they just like the security of having something there. I have silk plants in my tank, and my boesmanis seem very happy. I suppose, though, that another benefit to real plants would be that they'd suck up nitrates, and if you do any reading, you'll find that most rainbowfish books say to keep nitrates in the tank kind of low. In fact, some rainbowfish keepers do large water changes several times a week for that reason. I don't do that, and I've kept boesmanis and red irians for two or three years now. But I am pretty good about tank upkeep -- I do regular water 25- to 30-percent changes every week or so, and my boesmanis seem very happy. In fact, I'd describe them as very hardy fish. Other interesting boesmani observations: The two largest males sometimes get into a "who's the big fish in this tank" thing where they'll spend about 24 hours posturing to each other. This often occurs after I add a new fish, or move a plant or piece of wood during a gravel vac. They're never physically aggressive about it. It just involves hovering in the water flank to flank, glaring at each other and fanning their fins rapidly. After about a day, one of them backs down. It's pretty interesting to watch, and as I said, they never, ever hurt each other. The dominant male is a bit brighter than the subordinate male, who's literally dimmed his colors (they were brighter before I got the other one) now that he's in the subordinate role. (The same is true of my red irian rainbowfish.) Anyway, as I said, they're really interesting fish, and also really beautiful -- when they're full grown, their colors actually seem to glow. Good luck -- I'm sure you'll love them! Last edited by LMuha at 21-Apr-2005 05:17 |

LMuha![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 908 Kudos: 1144 Votes: 183 Registered: 17-Mar-2003 ![]() | When I got mine, I only bought two at first, because I wanted to see how they did in my tank. I eventually added a bunch more, and I have to say that I didn't notice any behavioral differences between a pair and a group. Although conventional wisdom has it that rainbowfish prefer to be in shoals, mine seemed as happy as a pair (they were even breeding) as they do in a group. |
