Hi, I was thinking of setting up a breeding tank for some African Cichlids(some Hongi's, maybe some e. yellows too.)Are there any specifications or things in particular I should/should not do when setting up and maintaining the tank. The tank is about 24x18x18in.
Thanks

while I don't have much experience with African cichlids, I'm going to go out on a limb and say the tank won't be big enough for both species. you may be able to do one of them since the tank is 18" wide.

And I'll Second that......

3' is really the minimum, you could try a trio of Lab C.(Yellow's) but thats the only one i'd try.
But I tend to think you'll still run into problems, in the long run.

You can get 1 male & 3 females Yellow Labs. You can also add a couple of rocks.

Rocks are good, but for breeding purposes.....

I'd go with a very thin layer of silica sand and a few clay pots(Bottoms broken out). I find it so much easier to maintain. Really you can use what ever ya want but the simpler the better in a breeding set-up.
Just be sure those females have some sort of cover.

Good Luck and let us know how ya make out

Hi, Well I went through with the 1:3 ratio of males to females of Lab C's and are just settling in now and everything seems to be going alright....so far. I decided to go with sandstone rocks in with the Lab C's as I just love the way it kinda brings out the colour in them....Just a quick question, Is there a certain amount of time it takes them to start breeding?

Well what size are they? I'm guessin around 2"+ as labs are very hard to sex at a young age. I've seen them hold at about 2" before though. Just let them get settled in. They'll get going and soon your posts will say "what do I do with all these fry" LOL. Good luck.

Yes they are about 2" and I'm not quite sure what sex they actually are so I'll have to wait a little while for that I guess....
