I had to do a total large ceiling repaint with special sealing paints to cover the oil stains from a so called oil burner. As far as I know the fumes carry microscopic oil particles and could either enter through your filtration system if it uses a air stone, or lay on top of the water. One way of testing is clean a large piece of glass and lay it on top of the tank to see if any oil particals are on the glass. Leave the glass there for a minium of 48hrs. But as long as the tank lids fit well, and you're not using an air pump, it should be fine. If you do use an air pump, I wouldn't burn anything near it. |

So long as you match the temp, pH, hardness, etc. of the replacement water with the tank water, you can do waterchanges practially as often as you want/can. Your fish certainly wont mind extra water changes. Every once in a great while a post will show up with someone with a planted tank who hasn't done a water change in 3 to 6 months, and apart from topping off, they find that the nitrates are reasonable and the fish are healthy and then they ask "why are we doing water changes again?" One of my points is always that water changes take out the very concentrations of cooking oil and cigartette smoke and cleaning fumes and carpet fumes and all the other crud that is in very small concentrations, but do find their way into the tank. Changing water wont keep the levels at zero (unless you do 100% water changes) but it does keep the levels of pollution manageable. |
