My dad is an engineer soon to retire and I'm a fish-head freak, so we had the thought that maybe we should get into custom aquarium building/maintaining. Is there good money to be made in this business?

Do a bit of investigating in your area. What do other services charge for clean/maintaining tanks. How many would you have to do to make it worthwhile?

Same story for building. What are the costs of materials vs. how much stands sell for. Maybe your creations can't compete with mass produced things. So perhaps customising is a niche market, although fewer people would buy a customised tank than a cheaper mass produced one.

Never know, do your homework and numbers and see how it adds up.

GOOD LUCK.

I have also thought of doing this as I was unemployed for like a year after completing a degree in Business/I.T.

But got a job and didn't end up pursuing this.

Like mentioned above see what your competition is like. You would service these once a month so you would need enough to fill a month and look after these clients. Service then with all requirements (plants, chemicals, food, fish) Maybe talk to you local fish shop and see if they will recommend you to there clients as well and even see if they will get into a deal with you so you get cheaper stock from them??

I did have this just about in place when I was thinking of this and feel that this would be an important part to your success.

Good luck. HTH

Thanks guys! It just sounds like fun-- I couldn't imagine sitting in a cubicle all day for more money, as opposed to doing fishy stuff for less money. Just need to investigate and make sure it's all worth it

If you dad is an engineer i`m sure he knows all about cost and profit. The most important thing is advertizement. Tell you dad to speak with someone in advertizing at his work and they might give him some helpful hints. Sounds like a great idea. Will he make me a 150 gal for my Clown Loaches?
