I read a book that reccomended butterfly fish with 12 tetras, 3 corys, 3 flying foxes, and a bristlemouth catfish. I'd like the butterfly fish, but I'm afraid it will eat the tetras. Will it? If it will help, my tank is a 20 long

All those in a 20 long? The butterfly is very likely to eat smaller tetras like neons and similar sized species, and larger tetras will crowd the tank even more. The setup you mentioned should work, but unfortunately in a larger tank.

Instead maybe stock it with a school of small tetras, a bristlenose, some corys and a dwarf gourami? Just an idea

around 6 inches would probably be the max size. a 20 gallon with a tight cover should do.
