I currently have a standard 4ft tank (about 40 or so gallons i think) and want to add some different sorts of fish.

Current stock:
3 pearl gourami
16 WCMM
1 CAE

I know there could be problems with the CAE, but he's already big and all he molests are my plants.

I'd like to add a trio of mollies, or a school of black skirt tetras, or a school of glassfish if i can find any that aren't painted. Would adding one of these options overstock my tank?

How planted is the tank

IMO, adding the black skirts wouldn't overstock, as they stay on the small side and arent' all that active. I'd worry with the mollies unless you were to get all males. Glasscats I'd worry about because of their size

Do you know the height of your tank? The most common 4ft tank here is a 55g. I've never seen a 40g. 40g long, 45g long and 55g all have 13"depth/width. A 55g is 21" tall and a 40 is only 17" tall. I don't know if you could fit another school in the midlevel since all you have are mid-top level fish. You could add something like cories or loaches to a 55g. My concern with the cae wouldn't just be agression but that they can get almost a foot in length which is a bit tight for any of those tanks.
