rainbows are peaceful, love swimming space, and are not too messy
There are hundreds of varieties of rainbowfish.
You could probably even do a smaller rainbow like Threadfins or Celebes.
Dwarf neon and Turqoise rainbows are smaller and pretty
Boesmani are nice and reach around 4-6 inches
There is probably a rainbowfish to match every persons taste!
I think you could probably add a small school of a medium size rainbow like Turqouise or Ornate , or you could add a larger school of a smaller rainbow variety like the threadfin or celebes varietys

Mmmmmmmmm Shame we live so far apart r0b3y I have 8 rainbows I wish to re-home at the moment (4 Blue and 4 Red tail banded) I wish to Re-home them to make Room for a yellow Severum and some pearl gourami. No they are not to messy and are great fish to watch they are very active but the rule with these is the opposite to other fish it is always best to get more males to females it encourages the beautiful colours out on them. I am not sure about you having them in a 40 gallon though as you do normally have to keep them in groups of 4 and above. I would not recommend less than four the ideal would be six really. They can grow quite big depending on the breed but there are dwarf varieties out there maybe you could fit those in. I have eight but my tank is 400 litres.
