There are plenty of nice looking killifishes that you can add to the tank. Doesn't have to be clown killis. =) My pencil fish stays in the middle area mostly. I have nothing on top. I tend not to put guppies or endlers because it doesn't seem very natural, they always swim towards me when I'm near, just looking for food most of the time. I rather have them just swimming around and doing their own thing. =) My pygmy sunfishes are always hiding, I rarely see them, I think I may need to put some more in there.

Thanks again. My dwarf tank is kept at 76-78F. The only thing that may be problematic is that I already have quite a few top dwellers there (4 male Endlers & 3 dwarf pencilfish in 15g) so adding a couple of clown killies may make it a bit crowded on the top.

Also I have cherry red shrimps in the tank =)
I forgot to mention that. I may get 2-3 scarlet badis to add to the tank. This is my display tank, I have a bunch of tanks, but they are all to keep and breed my killis.

The 2.5g breeding tank was at 68ºF during the day and 66ºF during the night. I just recently place the 2.5g tank in a large bucket with a heater in the bucket. I use this method to heat up 3 2.5g tanks at once. The temperature is at 74ºF.

The 20g dwarf tank is kept at around 76-78ºF.

Thanks for that, wheezo! Sounds like you have a very similar set up to my dwarf tank. I've been thinking about add a couple of clown killies there since it will probably be a while before I can add more Habrosus into the tank (not available ATM). I do have Elodea as floating plants there. What temperature do you keep your 2.5g breeding tank & the 20g dwarf tank?

Not to mention, I also have habrosus corydoras and pygmaeus corydoras! =) The pygmy corys are in the dwarf tank, and I am trying to breed the habrosus.

I have E. Annulatus in my 20 gallon dwarf tank, with pygmy sunfish, boraras maculatus, boraras brigittae and nannostemus eques. They are fine, you can even add some floating plants to make them feel at home. My fishes have no trouble chasing down food. They are always at the top, so flakes are theirs first and pretty much anything else that I put in. I have a trio in a 2.5 gallon tank and I breed them, when they are big enough, I just put them in the 20 gallon tank. The eggs are extremely small and the fry would need tiny foods, such as infusoria, micro worms etc.
IME, I think they would be okay in your dwarf tank. Just add some floating plants.

upikabu, where did you find these??

I'd very much like to get my hands on some.

Hi,

I saw some clown killifish/panchax at an LFS over the weekend for less than AU$5 each. Does anyone have experience with this fish in terms of hardiness? Can they be kept in a 27C/80F community tank with corys, cardinals, a pair of Bolivian Rams, & possibly a female betta? If so, how big of a group do they need to be in or is a pair ok?

Thanks much!

I wouldn't do it. They're small, but they're also sensitive. Better to wait for some time in the future - they'll be available again.

I did consider putting a pair of them in my dwarf community tanks (Endlers, dwarf croaking gouramis, dwarf pencilfish, c. Habrosus & c. Hastatus), but unfortunately that tank is almost fully stocked and someday I'd want to up my Habrosus school when they're available. I do have a 2.5gal tank that's currently being used as a quarantine/hospital tank. Would a pair of clown killies be ok in that size tank?

Thanks!

Clown Killies IME are not a community fish. They won't thrive (and may stress to the point of death) in a mixed tank. One aspect of this is their small size - even adults make Neons look big, chunky, and robust. They're little, they're extremely gentle and shy, and they're not aggressive feeders.

I loved mine, but they have special needs and really deserve, if not a species tank, then a tank set up for them, with, say, a small species or Pencilfish or C. habrosus.

Thanks. I doubt the ones I saw were wild-caught, at that price. I read somewhere (Baensch Atlas?) that these fish are quite rare in the wild anyways. Have you ever kept them, bettachris? If so, which do you like better, them or betta? I'm trying to decide between a female betta or some clown panchax for top dwellers.

Cheers.

umm, i am guessing that these fish are use to all kinds of water temps, and qualtiy, seeing how they are wild.

they should be ok in a 80. but i wouldn't go past 84

My main concern is the 27C/80F temperature. The Baench Atlas says they should be kept in lower temps (24C).

depends on the tank size, why, becasue from that stock list, it would depend on numbers, to figure out the school size. generally they should be fine in a peaceful community tank.
