Thanks all for the input - Bob lots of great stuff there and I just may take your suggestions. I've always wanted to give discus a try, just haven't ever taken the step.

I put one on my 125G with two timers. The lfs swapped out the actinic and 10,000K bulbs for 6,500K bulbs for the fixture. I put two timers on the lights so that one pair stays on for 12 hours and the other pair for 10 hours. It gives the tank a "step-up" in lighting each morning and a "step-down" each evening. Negotiated the price to $500US.

I'll make it an african cichlid tank.
I'll have a giant sump on the tank.
And i'll fill the tank up with australian desert rock.

Then for fish I think some lake victorian cichlids would be nice

Stocking is always a matter of personal preference. My preference is discus as they can provide the flash of saltwater fish without all of the necessary equipment and chemistry. My vote would then be:
15 discus with BN and German Blue Rams as the clean-up crew in a biotope tank.

Light would be the JBJ fixture that provides 384W from 4 96 watt lamps. It includes blue LEDs for night viewing. The biotope tank would feature the foam, cut-to-fit background that replicates a bank with embedded branches. Other branches would extend over a dark gravel. The background will mask filter intakes and discharges as well as temperature sensors.

Filtration and heat would be provided by two Eheim Professional II 2128 Thermo-filters that are matched with Coralife UV sterilizers.

Since these are your dollars I would definitely recommend the "command center".

Benthochromis tricoti and Cyps, definitely. And a really top-notch Back to Nature background, and a biiiig sump, and an automatic water change system, and Jager heaters (in the sump, of course), and really nice, fine sand, and some undergravel jets. Siiiigh.

Good taste, good taste.

150 gallon is big enough for... Rhinopias. Yes, yes, Rhinopias... If you wanna stay in the realm of freshwater, a Blue Eyed Panaque is in there at the very least, or perhaps a Zebra Plec colony. A larger tank would give me capability of messing with Merodontotus tigrinus, stingrays, and Australian Lungfish, some of the most awesome fish ever.
