That is definitely way too many and way too few all at the same time. Too many fish for the tank, IMO, and as was stated before, those are all schooling fish that you have listed as getting 2 of. None of them would be happy, and some of those are some serious fin nippers. Of everything you have listed I had the worst time with the Buenos Aires Tetras. They got rather large and were so nippy that I lost several fish who were not fast enough to escape them even though the tank had MANY hiding spots, as it was heavily planted. Needless to say, those fish were returned to the LFS! As for the guppies and mollies, I am a bit confused... do you want them together, or just curious how many you could have of each if it was a species tank?

Tetra's & Corydoras like to stay in schools & so the minimum number of each type is 6.

I'm from Auckland :-) Where in Australia are you?

Dwarf Otos will suck onto the glass, and don't exceed 5cm / 2 inches - I've got one in my 15 Gal, and he seems to be doing quite well for himself - also does a good job cleaning algae off plant leaves. :-)

You could also try a Bristlenose Catfish (Also known as a Bushy Nose Pleco) - they grow maybe 12cm / 4".

Sydney from Wellington, eh? Must be quite a climate change ;-)

Anywayz.. U probably don't want to take my advice on stocking, coz all of my tanks are overstocked, but at the mo I have 5 Cardinal Tetras, 4 Redwag Platys, 3 Yoyo Loaches, 2 Clown Loaches (small ones), 1 Cobalt Dwarf Gourami and my 1 Dwarf Oto in my 15 Gal.. It is my hope, tho, that I can move some of them to a bigger tank in the next few years (especially the Clowns - they grow very slowly, but they can get _big_).

Stocking is something of a contentious issue, coz it relies on so many factors - filtration efficiency, size and mass of the fish, frequency of maintenance etc etc... The 1" of adult size/gallon is the most commonly touted rule, but I would say that would cause you to understock if you were talking very small fish (i.e. you could probably put 15 neons in a 10 gal tank - maybe even more), but overstock big fish (2 x 5" fish in a 10 gal wouldn't work, nor would 1 x 10" fish)..

The best advice I've heard came from my LFS - "Use your discretion" - learn how big they get, learn how fast they grow, learn about any territorial behaviour they have, and work from there.

2 Serpae Tetras (Hyphessobrycon callistus)
2 Black Tetras (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi)
2 Black Phantom Tetras (Megalamphodus megalopterus)
2 Buenos Aires Tetras (Hemigrammus caudovittatus)
2 Silver Tip Tetras (Hasemania nana)
2 Aspy Cats (Aspidoras pauciradiatus)
1 Spotted Catfish
(in a 55 liter (15 gal) tank? (just curious))

Missing cold weather sounds a tad strange :-) Surely Sydney is too hot in the summer ;-)

Any of those arrangements would be fine (IMHO)... Just watch out for them breeding, since those fish are all livebearers - when I first purchased livebearers (2 Platys) I didn't realise that I had purchased a male and a female :-P They spawn once a month, even in the poor water conditions of a cycling tank :-(

So could I put...
5 guppies, 2 Platys & 4 mollies?
or 5 mollies 2 platies
or 6 neon tetras & 4 mollies

[font color="#800080"]Absolutely NOT!!!! For 1 thing, Mollies get too big for a 15g tank. Way too big. Most types of mollies reach around 4 inches in length. No fish that large is OK in a 15g tank. You would be better off to get a bigger tank to start with. Dont overstock small tanks. I know what the result is. I had tons of guppies and platys in my 25g, and I bought some new fish who had a disease, and now almost all my fish have died!
You could have 6 guppies, 4 females and 2 males, and 2 platies, 2 males would fight so I would recommend females.
OR you could have 6 Neons and 6 rummynose, and a BN Catfish or a couple of Ottos.
Plan to not have more than 10-12 fish in the tank.
Also, remember you have to cycle your new tank.
I would recommend if at all possible, if your money or space allows, getting the biggest tank you could possibly afford/fit in your home. You will save yourself overstocking problems, illnesses, and grief in the future. Small tanks are horrible for new fish keepers to start with. I would recommend a 30g-55g tank for beginners.

Do u know where I could get 1 in sydney for less than $60?
Sorry the best (well only) spot in my house can only fit a 15 gal, so should I not get into "fish-keeping" yet?

(he,he I got a 5 gal 4 x-mas it had "beginner tank" on the front & I dont think it was ment 2 be 4 bettas, I currently have 2 guppies in it)

Could I put 4 mollies & 2 sucker fish things? please don't shout]
