Backstory: I got put in charge of my bio lab's fish tank. Everything was going well, until one of the teachers dumped in more fish Not only did it become overstocked, I found out my bio teacher(who is pretty old), has some outdated notions on fishkeeping. well we've lost close to 20 fish so far...I'm not in there nearly as much as i thought i would be, so i couldnt do much.

Now theres only these left:

3 neons
1 glowlight
2 danios

I would very much like to rescue the glowlight(she wont let me take em all), right now all i can offer is my 5 gal with:

2 male gups
1 oto
1 apple snail

Would it be ok to add him, just until i can get a bigger tank? He's been toughing it out all year, and i really want to give him a nice big school and better water And im going to get more oto's as well.

While I applaud the generosity of your sentiment, consider, is it likely that the fish suffered from a parasite or disease that you may bring home to your tank via the single glowlight tetra?

Also, with so few fish remaining in the lab tank, surely even a low maintenace water change regime ought to keep the tank in good shape?

If under or over feeding is a major issue, install an automatic feeder, adjust the setting appropriately and hide the food jar.

Do a WC once every week or every two weeks and it should be good.

I agree, tetras should be kept in a school, at least 6 IMO, with more being better. As you can not provide for this at home just yet, I'm not sure that moving the fish to your small home tank would represent a significant change for the better.

Maybe get the new tank first, get it cycled and then bring the glowlight home? You could even QT it in your old small tank.

On the other hand, if you are convinced that leaving the tetra in the lab tank means certain death for it, well, it can hardly do worse...

As much as i would like to QT and do everthing in the proper order, the Bio tank is getting dismantled very soon. All the fish are being given away, and no one really wants the fish or how to care for them. My Bio teacher cornered me this morning and asked me to take some of them. So as of monday, this guy is following me home

I really would have wanted to have a bigger cycled tank set up and ready to go, but alas...

I think its better they go home with you katie than be left with someone who knows nothing about caring for fish. It might not be an ideal situation but fishie will thank you for it.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Firstly how big is the lab tank? If it is more than a 5 gallon, add 2 more neons and 4 more danios.

Take the glo-light home with you, and when you get a bigger tank, add 5 more glo-lights.

As for the lab tank, if it is 5 gallons or less, add 1 more neon and 2 more danios, with twice weekly water changes.

"Firstly how big is the lab tank? If it is more than a 5 gallon, add 2 more neons and 4 more danios."

We're dismantling it within the week, so this wouldnt quite work

"Take the glo-light home with you, and when you get a bigger tank, add 5 more glo-lights."

Deffinately, he and my oto deserve friends.

"As for the lab tank, if it is 5 gallons or less, add 1 more neon and 2 more danios, with twice weekly water changes."

Ehh, im in the "Schools of fish need 10 gallons or more" camp. Besides, danios are too rowdy for a 5
