This story about cabomba was on the cover of today's L.I. Newsday. And I can't even grow it in my tank.

Wow, thanks for the link, interesting story. I was amazed they called it "cabomba weed" - only because I'm used to hearing it talked about as a beautiful aquarium plant. But then again, I guess once these plants find the right conditions they can explode. To be honest I'm surprised nothing like this has happened with hygro. polysperma... that's the most weed like plant I've ever seen. The lesson is, never flush plant clippings down the toilet.

I was surprised as well. I guess when you pay $2 to $4 in an aquarium store you don't consider it a weed. This plant is so delicate, but as you said if it finds the right conditions. Long Island sun in the summer is really strong.

Yes, I guess I don't need to go to my lfs to buy any cabomba. I'll just go to my lwf (local water front).

what babel said

What a way to make some money at the lfs with all that cabomba.

Who says it can't be exterminated?...if all the auqarist's on FP came to take some, the problem would be over

But yeah that is one nasty weed I really hope it doesnt cause much more destruction...but I don't doubt it will

well..its not only cabomba making havoc like this...any non-native plant/s that get/s into the lakes could take its hold if the condition permits...i know...even java moss is a real pain in some parts of the country.

this require responsible handle of all products be it fish or plants on the part of the hobbyist.

hmm, we have a sea weed similar to it i keep forgetting to grab some when i go fishing, but, durring parts of the year, loads detach, float to the surface, and have huge long trails of it, its hard to row through, and swim through, but then it lands on beaches, dogs eat it, then they dir but if it survives the dry land, then when the water rises then falls, t takes the seeds, and durring winter they sit waiting, then sprout kinda destructive

This should be a reminder for all of us not to dispose of our tank plants (even smaller pieces) by flushing them down the toilet or any way that would have them end up in our waterways.

Sorry to spoil the good mood of getting freebies a little.
