I'll wager that it is an Amazon puffer. They can certainly be nippy, but it does depend somewhat on the individual-- I've personally never had this problem, even with angels and neons. They aren't in the least aggressive, but if anything looks particularly snackable on a fish, then it's gone.

Are "South American" puffers the same as Peruvian puffers? Because we constantly have people bringing those guys back for nipping the fins off their fish. But then again when we ask what they were keeping them with, they usually have at least a few long-finned species in the tank.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

The tetraodon mbu says hi. .
Remember, they can puff up, this is an incredibly effective defense. I've personally seen a baby dwarf puff up on a full grown electric yellow. The thing hadn't a chance to go down the hatch. Besides, by the time the the BGK reaches a proper size to engulf a fully inflated puffer, he should be long gone, happily swimming in a 120 gallon, etc. If nothing else, preadators will spit out the puffers after a few tastes-t.toxin tastes horrible. If the BGK finally does get it down, well then, he's screwed. Death by t.toxin comes in nearly a minute. Carinotet irrubesco can reach up to three inches in length. even mildly puffed up, the BGK can't get it.

Noodles, I'm not sure as to what puffer your talking about, giving that....

As far as I know all real FW puffers (and the only ones I know of that are real FW) are very small.

A BGK's mouth is huge. One that is 3 inches he could
easily swallow a neon.

IMO ATM any real FW puffer could not be kept with one unless you are prepared to loose a fish. They are very good predators.

What can you keep with him?
Any fish that is peaceful, and that will not bother him to much in his house. Believe it or not. I've seen mine make a fish that came in there float. I guess he stunned it with his electrical organ.

I have personally kept irrubescos with angels, and no problems have resulted. S.A.s are supposedly or similar temperament.

Both south american and irrubesco puffers should be fine, as they aren't e to be particularly nippy.

What to do, what to do. I am in need of some suggestions. I have a completely empty 29 gal... I want a BGK... I know how big it gets, and yes it will be moved to a 75 eventually. What can I put with one? Any tips on keeping the damn thing alive? I have had 2 in the past, and both have died. I'm not going to give all the details, but it sucked. All kind responses welcome.

Can the puffers go with a BGK?
Negative.

Puffers are just to nippy, not to mention small. They might go missing every now and then.

With mine well fed =s no missing fish...
Hungry...(forgot to feed) =s Hey! I know I had another tetra.

I'm puzzled by the deaths. I fear that they might not have gotten enough food, but that not very likely. IME when they are new to a tank they really should be fed a decent portion at night. Lights out means no/most of the other fish will not have a chance to eat his food. Feeding durring the morning doesn't work very well. No worries about the light. He WILL find that food. The room should also be very dark. I've gotten mine to eat with the rest of the fish, but that took a month or so. Even then he won't leave the bottom of the tank unless the lights are out.

A good floating food I found that works great is small shrimp (baby krill) I toss a pinch or 2 in after lights out and come morning there is no trace of it.

They were from 2 different lfs's and I fed them in the mornings with bloodworms, and 15 minutes before lights out... I think they may have been from the same farm though... I just don't know what got them... Can the puffers go with a BGK?

Forget a community tank, and do something more specialized. How about an all-Corydoras tank, or the mentioned freshwater puffer tank? Either of those would be cool.

FW Puffer tank man!

Stupid question:
what was your feeding routine for them? I ask this because I find it funny that you had 2 of them die back to back like that.

Also were they from different LFS? Maybe that one had some bad stock.
