I was at lfs yesterday and in their ghost shrimp tank there were two little fish sitting on the bottom. I inquired into them and the owner of the store said they came in a ghost shrimp shipment and he did not know what they were. He gave them to me.

After searching the internet a while, I believe it is a green side darter, or very very similar.

I was not able to find informaiton on keeping them, however.

Does anyone know their needs concerning food and water parameters? They are a bit less than 2 inches at this point.
They are currently in a 55 gallon community tank, 78 degree water.

Thank you for any information.

Most darters I have run across are native fish. They will do well in the community tank provided you keep in mind their needs. If you can keep the tank a little cooler (not sure of your current inhabitents), then do so. They are a coldwater fish that can handle the cooler side of tropical temperatures, (even a few degrees helps). Not sure if you have them eating yet, but if you can't get them to eat then swap them over to frozen or live foods. The ones I have had were mostly carnivorous. If you have any territorial bottom dwellers you mighthave some issues with the darters getting enough food.

Goodluck, those are some pretty cool fish

any chance at pictures? definately would be cool to see some greensided darters, I've never seen those. Seen the black version though.

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.

I definitely would, but they are not native to California so I cannot catch any. I've been thinking of purchasing some off of Aquabid and putting them in my native Californian tank.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I'd love to get some but I haven't been able to catch any. In fact despite there being many native species here I've never even seen one.

Hey guys, they are called darters. I bet it is for a reason. Sorry, I just had to!

Those fish are kinda nifty looking. Can you guys tell me anything about them?
