I really want to have some Discus...now i have angels but i think that i have to remove the angels if iam going to buy discus. Now in my 75g tank i have 4 gold angels,2 three spotted gouramis,1 pleco,1 feathef-fin cafish.
So what would you do..
And is it really that difficult to breed discus?

Unless you know what you are getting yourself into, you need to be mentally and physically prepared to raise discus, good water wquality, good food, the room...

72 gallon bowfront:Tanganyikan Lake set up
75 gallon: A. Baenschi trio,Cyanotilapia Afra Cobwe(4), copadichromis trewavase, protomelas sp. tangerine tiger(breeding pair)

If you want to breed the Discus, i recommend, that you leave them on their own in a good sized tank, where they will raise their own fry.

Discus do best in tanks that are set up specifically for them, rather than being placed into existing communities.

Like others have said, Discus need to be put into tanks set up around them, then build around that. Discus are nice, but do need a little more effort than other fish.

to much fishies.

a tank for them selves with clean water, and big enough for adding 6 and let them pair off, is good for breeding.

It is the same dilemma we all face a one time - we buy a 30 gallon tank but after a while think about moving up to a 55g - then later a 75g or 90g - I have two tanks - both with angels - personally I am partial to angels - but with that said I have always wanted to keep discus - but then I started reading about what it takes to keep them healthy and I decided for me that water changes at least 3x a week wasn't really how I wanted to spend my life - ultimately it is your choice - you won't go wrong either way - but at least go in knowing what is required -

I love both kinds of fish. If you decide to add discus to your tank, I would eliminate the angels, the feather fin and the plec. Ancistrus are fine, angels will out compete the discus for food.

If you are looking to breed discus, I would use a 20 gallon, bare bottom breeding tank. E-mail with questions.

Angels are a tougher and more gregarious fish, often with more personality, so I wouldnt be too keen to trade them in for discus. Several years ago I tried to keep discus and angels together, and while they did not outcompete each other for food there was territorial aggression that was sustained and severe, often started by discus and finished by the angels. An outbreak of hole in the head syndrome pretty much made my mind up on the issue and I seperated them for treatment and never recombined them.
Angels are not for beginners, and discus are trickier yet.Sure people have some incredibly beautiful discus , but a lot of aquarists will have had a great deal more fun and value for money from their angels.

When discus were first introduced into the hobby they did seem to be much stronger, Ive seen batches of them die in peoples hands all over the place lately (including experts)- it seems as if increasing numbers of specimens are being born immuno-supressed. Angels however dont seem to be in the same state and lots of people are keeping them with success.

I think its probably better to keep discus in nice species tanks where the conditions are designed specifically for them rather than compromise those needs with community tanks. A lot of people underestimate just how high temperatures need to be for discus- often the consistantly mid 80's, a lot of other aquarium fish will not do well at temps at that high range.

discus are very hard to keep. you have to maintain the water quality, ph , hardness, temperature. Breeding is more difficult. They are not good community fish. BEst kept with tetras. They feel more safe with free swimming tetras. But if you really want to pursue discus, go ahead, experience is always best than knowledge. You'll never know till you try.

Leave it. Focus on taking care of the fish you have now, rather than getting rid of them and buying new ones. Seriously, I feel sorry for those poor, unwanted angels
