Hi

Sorry for the long post but on the subject of disgraceful local fish shop I had to write on this matter

Have a lot of LFS’s in my area – the closest is terrible

Their aquatics department is only part of a large store

I think they are part of chain of shops but can only write about my LFS

The staff are youngsters and their knowledge I would say is at best 5 out of 10. It seems they will say anything to budding customers to sell the fish. I had to correct one salesperson on explaining how to keep a goldfish

The tanks are in a shocking condition, plain boring glass cubes (although I can not check the water parameters), there are

1 Too many fish for the tank size
2 Leaking tanks
3 Wet floors
4 Diseased fish
5 Dead fish
6 Decaying plants
7 Are the fish fed enough? – if at all!!

It makes you wonder why a show tank is working fine one day and the next its closed down, empty, and being re-positioned – where did all the fish go? (perhaps they sold them all!)

A back wall of salt water tanks were full one day, empty the next and the following day GOLDFISH, yes GOLDFISH, were displayed in them – where did all the fish go? (perhaps they sold them all!)

They have had two major leaks there in the past two months – where on both occasions - as far as I can tell the whole of the tropical set up must have nearly drained. Fish were now sharing the small tanks, a lot had “gone” – presume dead - and those left were kept in total darkness for days whilst the leakage was repaired

I know they have a business to run – but these are living creatures – and they deserve a decent lifestyle – many are wild caught species probably their population is in decline and to come to such an end is diabolical

Members have mentioned not buy from these shops – but must admit have purchased the odd one from here just to give a fish a life!!

But there again these are “superstores” they should look after their goods, prevent wastage, make more money. A lot of the smaller LFS in the area can do it – and there are some wonderful ones - these set a fine example

Regards

Dave

johnsfish1984 recently had some good luck reporting a lfs for poor treatment of their fish and actually made a difference. That post can be found at http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/General%20Freshwater/61073.html
I think that is one of the very rare cases that a difference can really be made, but it may be worth a shot. You should also point out that wet floors from consistently leaking tanks are a detriment to all customers in the store.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Their only interest is to sell the fish & nothing else. They don't take care & feed the fish well.

It really is a shame they keep their fish in such deplorable conditions.
