| Do I have room? | |
covered-in-bees![]() ![]() Fingerling I am not a mushroom! Posts: 47 Kudos: 36 Votes: 20 Registered: 16-Mar-2005 ![]() | I have in my 29g: 5 cories, 6 harlequin rasboras, and 4 guppies. I would like to get a large centerpiece fish and maybe something for algae. What would be the best fish for my situation? That's assuming I have room. ![]() |

What species of cory do you have, and do you have male and female guppies? The reason I ask is because Corydoras aeneus and C. paleatus are the largest cories, and take up much more space in a tank than some of their smaller kin. Five three inch cories (namely C. aeneus and paleatus) occupy a larger area of the bottom than do five two inch cories. As for the guppies, males and females together mean that you will end up with fry. If the fry have places to hide, some or most of them will survive and grow. The more that make it, the less available space there is in your fish tank. See what I'm getting at? You probably have room in your tank for more fish. I personally wouldn't get a centerpiece and an algae eater, you should choose between the two. Algae eating fish tend to put out a lot of waste, as do some of the larger fish. Bigger fish certainly tax a tank's bioload more than rasboras and cories do. Because they are much more visible and attention-drawing, let's assume that you want to get the centerpiece. Are you looking more for color or for personality here? If you want colorful fish, a gourami such as a pearl would work here, and not bother the guppies. If personable fish are your bag, maybe some kind of peaceful cichlid(s) (an angelfish, rams, Apistos, checkerboards, etc.) would work. They are usually more intelligent than gouramis, and display a greater range of behaviors. I'd go with a pair of curviceps cichlids just for fun, but that's me. They can be delicate, but they are certainly cool to keep. I really like the ones at my work, as they are willing to interact with people. Last edited by sirbooks at 12-Apr-2005 16:08 |

Do you have plans for guppy fry or do you have all males in the tank? Depending on what corys they are and if the tank is planted or not I'd say that you already are fairly closed to stocked. ^_^ [hr width='40%'] It only hurts when I breathe" ![]() |

I think they are female. I also have a 5g for any fry. I would like a fish that has color, I'm not sure how much personality a fish could have! Maybe cuz I haven't seen any with much. Actually I enjoy my cories, they are rather personable! |

You have a nice tall tank, which is perfect for an Angelfish. They have tons of personality and come in many color variations! A Betta could also be a good choice for you, or a Gourami (dwarf or thick lipped, paradise, or honey, pearl, sparkling) Another option is a Ram - Bolivian or German Blue rams are nice. Keyhole Cichlids are also nice. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

The problem is that you cannot add both fish in your 29Gal. & you have to choose one of them. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Worry about preventing the algae rather than haveing it eaten. Anything from manual removal with a scrub pad during each water change to reducing nutrients and adding plants that will out compete the algae should help you out.^_^ [hr width='40%'] It only hurts when I breathe" ![]() |
