Maybe tell her that your tank looks so good because the fish aren't so big in proportion to the tank. Makes sense to me. The comet is gorgeous, it's a shame it's stuck in a 10

Sort of on the same lines, I used to work with someone who had tanks in his house of Oscars, Gars, and things of that sort. He bragged that he would go months without feeding them because it made them more viscious. I was SHOCKED! Some people are just cruel and discusting for the pure joy of it! It's a sad world we live in!

I went to my LFS today & overheard a man speaking to a very "young employee" about his fish tanks. Of what I understood he had a 5 gl tank with FIVE OSCARS! He stated that they were "fine" & he has "done it since he was young". He seemed to think it was so funny of how aggresive they are & how they seem to pair up.
My husband was with me so I could not get into a HOT debate about this kind of torture. I fumed when I drove off.IGNORANCE OR STUPIDITY?? I regret not saying anything to the man but what can u do?

The employee looked 16 maybe 17 & Just said "Oh,My Gosh. Those poor fish." I did not stay long enough to see if she sold him more fish.]:|

I believe care for fish needs to be taught at a young age by the parents. I have a 3yr old & he "helps" me with all the maintenience with our 72 gl. Water changes, water testing, cleaning, etc. He learns a little everyday & is learning the correct why of keeping fish.

I agree 110% babel! I really do not know how someone could even question that a fish feels things! I guess there will just never be enough people who care! As pets go, and just animals in general, fish get the crappy end of the stick!

They insist they are not meat and don't feel anything

Fish do feel...there was a study a few years back that fish actually do feel the hook as they're caught...so I cant immagine that they wouldnt feel pain being killed period.

I don't even want to contemplate the pain of being stunted .

I agree... if she is expecting them to "just eat each other", sneak out a couple here and there and liberate them. She is expecting losses, give her some! Poor fish! I can see why you would be venting!

I admit that when I first got into fish I put like 7 goldfish in a 30 gallon because I did not know any better, but as soon as I found out that that was unacceptable, I changed everything. Now people come into my house and see my 30 gallon and ask me why I do not have more fish in it (2 angels, 2 clown plecos) and I politely inform them that the tank is fully stocked. My fish are happier, and healthier, and that makes me happier. Too bad more people can not learn from their mistakes and treat fish like living things. Too many people dismiss them as if they are not feeling creatures. As an example... I am a vegetarian... I do NOT eat ANY meat (which to me includes ANY form of seafood)... no one understands why I would care enough about a fish to not consume them. They insist they are not meat and don't feel anything so why do I care. *sighs* Anyway, kind of went off on a tangent. I just wish more people were willing to treat ALL living things with the love and respect that they deserve.

The second photo itself is over stocked and it doesn't even show all the fish in it, crazy.

Looks like someone needs a more expensive hobby.
Seeing as they're a teacher I find it funny they like wasting money that much .
Sad.

I'm sorry folks, but I need a quick vent. I have been trying and trying to help this one teacher on my campus with her 10 gallon, I've even done the water changes. Finally she was down to her 1 comet (]:|don't start with me, I know better]:|), and one black skirt tetra ]:|. Well, last time I was in her room I noticed that the poor comet was turning white, she tells me the tetra keeps harrassing it...poor little baby, and now it is getting really skiddish, and trying to hide. I told her simply take the black skirt to the lfs in town and they will do a trade, get it some food. Well, anyways the class took it's field trip to the lfs and mcd's today (Lucky them, I got stuck locked in a classroom with 3rd graders all day]:| KTS I know you were locked in there with me, and you know this fussing isn't about youone highlight of the day ) Anyways, I see the before mentioned teacher and she tells me that I have to come and see the tank, that they got some new fish todayand then she says abotu 30 of them!!!I politely told her that she had way overstocked the tank, and her response was "well they will just eat each other, no problem]:|. I wait till after school, because well several reasons. I walk in and look at the tank it is swarming!!! I decide I have to take pictures and post them...but even as I was taking the pictures I noticed that there was a dead one already ]:| I took it out (bare hands didn't care to dig for a net) and had to flush it.

So I guess what I am trying to say, don't overstock your dang tank]:|...don't just tell me that it will be ok they will just eat each other]:|...by golly I love these little guys, and who cares if they are just feeder fish.]:|

So folks here are two pictures tell me what you think...Heidi

Her big comet...did I mention this is her favorite...he's lived for going on 5 years?

This only shows about 3-5 gallons of the 10 gallon tank.

There is some filtration in there...a UGF that's been in there for the 4 years or so, with a pump too small, and an HOB, that barely runs, because it's not kept up...I'm not gonna do too much else on it, I just wanted folks to see just how overcrowded someone could get a tank, and not worry about it...didn't want to start argumentsjust thought I'd share...Heidi

I have a guidence counsler at my school who does something simliar... with a 1 gallon. She keeps putting fantails in there, not babies either, she gets the bigger ones that can hardly move, and a 8" pelco. The water quality is horrible and I'm trying to talk her into getting a Betta and giving back the two other fish.

i dont know why you would go through all of this trouble.

If she didnt listen to you, fine, dont do anything about it, and let her kill her fish and feel bad for it.

You helping her, and doing everything for her will just more her more irresponsible. Maby when she realises that fish are living creatures too, she will start doing maintnence.

Yes, I do have a 10 gallon myself in my classroom, it contains 4 guppies and some MTS...She is always remarking on how nice the tank looks, and why can't her's look that way...At breaks and summer vacation she just leaves it and forgets about it...like leslie said it's amazing that one has lived so long...
The possibilities of the kids being able to take care of it are slim and none, as this is considered a life skills class...ie it is for those students who will probably never be able to live independently, and have trouble caring for themselves. It is a good thing when these students walk down the hall on their own, or even find their way to and from the bathroom on their own...I don't think they know the fish are there ...
You are right the time has come not to mess with the tank...it's just sad...Heidi

Sounds like that "teacher" is totally hopeless when it comes to looking after fish. What happens during the school breaks? I know what I would do but it is rather hard just forget her tank totally, it is her responsibility and hers alone. Make it known to the rest of the staff you are no longer taking any responsibility for her over stocked tank.
The students will soon work it out for them selves who is the most responsible at looking after a tank

Do you have a tank your self at school? At least that way she might see what can be done with correct management.

I can vouch for it. Saw her tank at the beginning of the school year. Lovely commet, I am just surprised that it was lived so long. Owner of tank isn't too regular about feeding. I think the only water changes that tank gets is when Heidi does it. I wonder what that teacher thinks she is teaching her students about care and responsiblity towards all living creatures by her example?
