I was thinking of adding a snail or 2 to my aquarium. I heard they consume flake food that settles on the bottom of the tank. Do snails also eat algae?

I have pond snails (uninvited) and they eat algae. Last spring I was gone for 2 weeks and came back to a spotless tank, much to my surprise.

Yes, I agree with tankie. It is important to get the right kind as some snail species prefer a nice plant over any algae. This is of course not a problem if you don’t have any plants .

But also remember that 2 snails will be 20 in no time (and so forth). If they cannot find any new algae or anything else to eat they will die and pollute your water (decaying body).

And remember as well that they add to your bio-load. 2 aren’t bad, but 20?
