Hi, my fiance bought a dogfish from a Bait shop. It looks like a lizard with 4 legs and swims in water. It has these things coming out of its head like the Predator. (Very ugly fish) I don't know what it eats or anything about it, can someone tell me???

Hey K, I tried to catch you in chat but you have already left.

I googled DOGFISH but that turns out to be a saltwater shark

I *think* you might have a type of salamander/amphibian type thing, like an axolotl (mexican walking fish)

I'm thinking perhaps a mudpuppy?

http://www.earlham.edu/~lanest/mudpuppy.htm
http://www.axolotl.org/index.htm (different species, but the info there is VERY good.)

From the page below
http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetology/amphibians/salamanders/mudpuppy.html

If so, you need good filtration as they are messy messy messy, and you need pelleted sinking food, or small pieces of fish meat (try the freezer section at the bait ship, I use squid slices) and you will need to handfeed it as they are a bit thick and have dodgy vision.

Hope this is the right creature.

Here's a pretty good site:

http://inky.50megs.com/axolotldiffs.html

Because you got it at a bait shop, it makes me think it's a "mudpuppy" as defined in the above link. It's a type of salamander that never morphs. They are selectively bred that way to make them easier to use as bait.

If it is a small brown lizard like thing that swims...Water dogs live in a creek by my boyfriends house. I dont know anything about them except that they live in creeks. Maybe that helps you out in terms of setting up an aquarium for it. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Neither they (nor axolotls) are "selectively bred" for neotony.

I searched for Water Dog...hoping that is what you have..and found an article on PetCo:

http://www.petco.com/PetcoOnline/CareSheets/CareSheets.aspx#Amphibians

Sorry..you will have to copy and paste..and then click on Aquatic Amphibians. It doesnt have a picture so you can identify it..but it does have other info. It also talks about other amphibians too so just disregard that. Good Luck!
