my girlfriend wants to start keeping fish, and i have a spare 10 gal. i've been trying to figure out what to do. i've decided that it will be a planted tank with some driftwood. fish wise is hard part.

here's what i was thinking:
7 harlequin rasboras
1 dwarf gourami
5 ottos

does that sound like too much? instead of the rasboras i was thinking maybe glowlight tetras, but can't make up my mind.

plant wise i was thinking java fern on the drift wood. haven't decided what else. lighting will be low to medium. i will be using florite, and can do co2.

any suggestions would be great.
thanks

too many fish for a 10 gallon tank
general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon

It sounds like you are off to a pretty good start.

I would cut your total fish down a bit.
5 Rasboras
3 Otos
1 Male or Female Betta.

For plants: Java fern is a great plant to start with. Also look at Java Moss and Anubias. You may be able to get a way with a handful more depending on how much like you put over the tank.

Too many otos. They'll starve to death from lack of algae and they push your limits for fish. Personally I prefer not to put any schooling fish in anything smaller than a 20g. There just isn't enough space for them to swim properly. I know a few people have done it with really small tetras like neons and a school of 5-6 fish but 10g tanks just aren't long enough for me. I only use them as species tanks to put 1 type of small nonschooling fish in.

Hi there,
I think you could wiggle it a bit,
say
6 Harlequin Rasbora
1 Dwarf Gourami
2 Otos

That should work out if the tank is heavily
planted.
