Hi, just wondering if anyone has an American Flagfish?? I am going to be purchasing one for my ten gallon in a few weeks (waiting for my LFS to get some in) and I just want to know if any has had any problems with this fish...just anything I should look out for.

I did have 2, a male and a female, but they were nipping the fins of my female bettas a lot, so I had to return them. So I guess my advice is, don't get them if you have fish with fancy fins. I think the store recommended one of each sex, because he said 2 males would fight, and the females don't have the "american flag". They are supposed to be pretty good at nipping algie, but I didn't have them long enough to find out.

good luck!

I've been keeping flagfish for years, - with Bettas, barbs, cichlids, and even tetras. And I've never seen any aggressive behavior.

If the tank is too small, or there is not enough hiding places like plants and rocks, almost any fish can become aggressive. That might explain the aggression you've seen.

Oh, and flagfish are the best algae eaters I've ever had!

I don't know why they liked to nip, but they sure did. They never chased fish around though, it was more like, if the fish held still, the flags were facinated and wanted to see what it was. When they swam away the flags never followed, and often seemed startled that the other fish would move at all.

I only had them for about 3 days, in a 46 gal tank with lots of (fake) plants. So I don't know what it was all about.
