She never said she screamed at anyone, and she would not have even known it was an accident had she not said something about it in the first place. As sad as it is, a lot of people who OWN pet stores do not even know about the practice of dying fish. I think you did the right thing, and good for you for having the nerve to stand up for your right to free speech, and for the poor fish who suffer and die so people can have unnatural colors in their tanks!

I was not rude, i just told him the truth. I am not trying to start an argument, i was just so upset when i saw them, i though people here would understand why i was. It just surprised my so much since i would never expect them to have dyed fish.

My friend who owns the lfs does strictly SW now, but before that he also did FW. He accidentally got in "blueberry" Oscars in an order of "mixed" Oscars. He had them out of the shop in a matter of a few days, findging homes and placing them as quickly as possible. I can believe that it is an accident if it happens once, but if it kept happening, then it would be harder to believe. Good for you for having the nerve to stand up for the sake of the fish!

I've been through the discussion regarding Parrotfish (and other hybrids, though mainly parrots) numerous times, so I won't get into it here. I think I'll just write a paper for an argument and see if it could get posted as an article...though a profile refuses to be posted, so I'm not holding my breath regarding an article...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

The pictures look really sad. I have never bought a dyed fish thanks to my husband from whom I acquired this hobby. He cares for his fish very well and has taught me to do the same.

Two things that I wouldnt buy from a shop would be dyed fish, and hybrid fish like the parrot, because the mouth of the parrot fish is acutally deformed and doesnt allow it to lead a normal life.

More information about the hybrid blood parrot and dyed fish.

More on why not to buy hybrid fish:

The fact that it's the first time that it's happened gives me the impression that it probably was an accident. As long as it doens't become a habit, I wouldn't condemn a whole store because of it happening once...

My dyed fish pic, normally reserved for people who ask about them...

You did a great job by informing the shop owner how fish are dyed.

There are many species of dyed fish out there, but there are also some fibaroonies about what fish regularly succumb to this practice.

Do not believe everything you read, always stay a little objective

a photo that I found somewhere on my hard drive.

Don't completely condem a lfs just because they sell something you don't agree with. Especially if they got them by accident. It can be very easy to mess up on an order. If they seemed as concerned as it sounds then you did everything you can.Don't completely abandon a good lfs especially if they're good.

If they say they did it on accident, then that's probably happened.

It's happened to our store before... We ordered "Skirt Tetras", figuring they were just regular black skirts. But instead, they gave those hideous dyed skirt tetras, and the distributor guy left before we could send them back. We kept them in our stock tanks, but instead of selling them we just gave them away for free to good homes.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

It is really sick what some people will do to animals. I've said it once and I'll say it again...would you tattoo an infant? Then why are you tattooing a fish? They have as much of a choice at being tattooed as a child, and in doing this to a fish it shortens their life, if it doesn't kill them in the process

Yeah, I bought two "blue berry tetras" when I was just starting back into the hobby. I didn't know about dyed or tattooed fish then. I am sorry I purchased them, I know that it shortened their lives.

Painted = dyed, as far as I know. "Painted" or "fruit" tetras are all just dyed fish, I'm sure it is the same for glassfish.

EDIT: Chris, if you like dyed fish, and don't like hearing the fish industry's dying practice being criticized, just don't read these threads.

I will not go back there without bringing them information on dyed fish

I think that's a good idea in addition to not shopping there.

I've seen dyed gouramis lately too, and parrots in every color of the rainbow ]:| I'd been wanting glassfish for a very long time but there was no way I'd by dyed fish.

At another lfs I've seen colored glassfish that they claim are painted rather than dyed...does anyone know about this?

PLEASE LOCK THIS POST!!!!! not another one.

There are multiple posts on a variety of topics. Personally I think this is informative...we get new members all the time who may not know about dying fish, I know I didn't when I first got into the hobby.

So i went to my LFS today and as usual the tanks looked great. I always refused to buy dog products from the, since they sold puppies (and i do not agree with selling puppies at pet shops...a whole other topic...) but their tanks were always spotless and they treated their fish very nicely. So my eyes almost popped out of my face when i saw dyed parrot fish! I had never seen dyed fish before, and i never realized how sad it really was. I then asked one of the employees if they knew how the fish were given that color. He said, "I am pretty sure they are painlessly injected, but i am not sure". I asked him if he wanted to know the truth behind dyed fish and he said he did not want to know how it was done if it was cruel, but i told him anyway, and i could tell it made him mad. Then the manager walked out and i asked him why they would buy fish that were so cruely treated. I told him all the details and he said he was aware and he had ordered the fish by accident. He then told me that he was going to find them good homes, but it still made me so mad, and i told him, "Make sure you let the future owners know that they are going to die young since they have been poisoined". I know it was kind of rude, but i was soo mad! Let's just say i walked out without my hornwort, and i will not go back there without bringing them information on dyed fish.
