Some of the eggs have hatched and I have 3 tiny bitssy lil' fishy that swam and "parked" themselves on the front glass on my tank.

Should I feed them or not. If not, when ?

Please, a swift reply will be most appreciated for I haven't got a clue if they are still carrying the egg sack with them or not... they are so tiny, I can barely make them out.

They should be good for at least a day. A good way to tell when they are ready to start feeding off of live food is when the majority of the fry are free swimming. (i.e not stuck to the front glass anymore and...well swimming around the tank)

Be sure that when they are free swimming feed upwards of 3 times a day (I'm pretty sure) and do frequent water changes to remove uneaten food. I tihnk microworms are good for them because they can survive in the water colum longer than most other live food, therefore not creating a dirty environment by rotting...plus it leaves something for the fry to snack on later.

Good luck.

Sponge,

The fry will feed off of the egg sac for about 5-7 days.
After day 5 you can begin feeding with some very well crushed flake, or some liquid fry food.
They will be free swimming also at about 5-7 days.
Good luck.

Thanks bro !

I just saw them swiming in the tank when I shut the light off but only to return on the front glass. I will wait till tomorrow and start feeding them with baby brine shrimps ( frozen ) for this all I have.

Imagine the stress.... Having my very first fry + starting a marine tank for the first time, all at the same time !!!

My wife and I are going NUTS !

You should be able to see a yolk sac if one is still there. If it is absent then it is probably time to start feedings.

HTH,

Hiya Sponge
BBS is what I feed my baby angels. They love them.
I find them very easy to hatch too- I do them in a simple glass fishbowl with an air stone and a table lamp over top. I get a great hatch rate. One bowl will feed the babies for about a week. I start a new batch on day 5 to give them time to hatch and grow a bit. You can feed them infusoria if you like to grow them up a bit.
I start my first batch on the third day after I see wigglers, and it takes about 24-48 hours for the brine shrimp eggs to hatch depending on temperature.

UPDATE - 6:40am

Looks like all the viable eggs have hatched and we are the proud grand-parents of 4 lil' bratty fry. They swam during the night I assume, because they are not at the same place anymore. I will start feeding very lightly this morning and see what happens. It's hard to believe that at that size, those lil' bugs can eat !

As mentionned in another post, I will attempt to make a water change. Problem is that I have "stuff" at the bottom and some sort of film at the surface. I wonder how I will proceed. At the top, I thought of using a paper towell to suck up the "crapola"... at the bottom, I can alway try to make a syphon out of some surgical turbing I have here. It should provide low succion and great control since I will be able to stop the syphon at any time by just squeezing the tube... given that I can actually prime this small tube to suck to begin with !

I will have pics this morning and will photoshop them, then post the link to them. Don't expect to see a fish. I doubt that my friends camera can do macro. But you will have a good general view of my setup.

That's it for now and thx for the help guys and gals. Couldn't have done it without you !

Sponge

Microworms, Infusoria & Live Brine Shrimp are all good for newly hatched fry.

This is my FINAL entry in this thread. I would like to thank evryone that shared their knowledge and experiences, making this a success so far.

I have managed to have pictures of the setup as requested. Therefor, I will write an detailled article regarding everything that I learned, with detailed pics and information on setting up a nursery.

This of course will take time and I plan on having it ready for the end of the week. Look for a new thread from me on the subject. Since I am not a premium member, the articles will have links to pics instead of pics embedded in the text. Sorry about that.

Thanks again and kind regards,

Sponge
