There are quite a few puffer options for a 29 gallon tank. Dwarves are an excellent choice, heavily plant/decorate the tank, tankmates could include shrimp and potentially ottos. Check out http://www.dwarfpuffers.com for more information on DPs.

Another freshwater option would be South American Puffers. These guys are quite hyperactive and grow larger than the dwarves. You could put 2, maybe 3 in a 29, again heavily decorated.

Figure eights are brackish, but you could put two in a 29. You could also add a couple of small gobies.

Check out http://www.pufferlist.com]http://www.pufferlist.com[/link] for more ideas on puffers. Also, the puffer forum is currently at [link=http://puffer2.proboards37.com until we get our technical difficulties resolved.

You will definitely want snails and similar crunchy foods as part of their diet. Especially for the South American puffs, on top of a regular crunchy diet, they will also probably need their teeth trimmed every four to six months. Pond snails and ramshorn snails seem to work best for puffer snacks. Avoid Malaysian Trumpet snails, they have conical shells that are very strong. They have been known to break puffer teeth.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

I would go with dwarf puffers also. They will need at least 2-3 gals per fish, so the most you could get was 14, but I might start with less. Just be aware that dwarf puffers are a little higher maintenance than most common fw fish. Like Calilasseia said, they need snails in their diet plus a variety of other things like frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Most don't even eat flakes.

Research beforehand - a very informative site to visit is dwarfpuffers.com. Good luck with whatever you choose!

ETA: Don't feed dwarf puffers the bugle kind of snails with the long, pointy shells. Pond snails are best.

I'd go with the dwarf Puffers. And, as has been said above, head for the specialist Puffer forum and ask the knowledgeable keepers about them.

Quite a few Puffers need brackish water for optimum health, but there are some that will live in pure freshwater. I seem to recall asking myself about an Amazonian Puffer species that would live in the same kind of soft, slightly acidic water as South American Characins and Dwarf Cichlids. However, I'd check adult sizes of the fish you alight upon beore committing yourself to a given species, because some Puffers grow to be BIG. WAY too big for a 29G. But there are also dwarf species that will live happily in such a setup.

Oh, and a second tip if you run with Puffers. They need hard shelled food to keep their beaks in trim. So start cultivating lots of aquatic snails for them to eat. A couple of pickle jars should be sufficient for cultivating aquatic snails: put the jars somewhere where they'll receive lots of light for the algae for the snails to graze upon, drop in some snails as your starter culture, and pop in small bits of Hikari Algae Wafer now and again as supplementary food for the snails. Then, fish out snails for your Puffers to eat as and when needed. I'd start the snail cultures a good two weeks before getting the Puffers, so that the snail cultures will be up and running and supplying you with food for the Puffers from the word go. Tailor your snails to your Puffers: if you get Dwarf Puffers of one kind or another, cultivate small snails for them, and if you decide upon one somewhat larger Puffer, cultivate bigger snails.

Don't go with a bass, they belong more in the wild than in the household tank in my opinion...we won't even talk about how big they can get if they are not stunted in too small of a tank. Also my mother many years ago (I refuse to say how long ago, because it will tell my age) tried to keep one, all you are going to end up with is a suicidal fish

I forget who made the reply of Corries, Angel, Harlequin Rasboras, but that would be a nice tank if you get the angel as a young small angel, and only one...

Take a hint of suggestion, go to your lfs and see what they have that catches your eye, then come back here and post what they have that you would seriously consider buying and learning about in order to keep. I wouldn't do Saltwater in a 29 as your first attempt at saltwater, it is a lot different than you might think...

Do that and report back to us...heidi michelle

figure 8s are brackish, but that doesn't mean they're impossible to keep...

Bass could be do able in your 29 gallon if you find one small enough. Say something like a 3" fish would be ok for a while. A friend of mine has kept bluegills before and they were prety cool. He in now keeping perch. They are super smart fish. Good luck with what ever you do.

Keep in mind f8s prefer brackish water. If you want more info on puffers, we have forum specifically for them. There are quite a few knowledgable posters who can help you out.

So what are you thinking of? Any ideas you have liked? You should look at the profiles, pick a fish, and then you can work around it.

Dwarf puffers, congos, and South american freshwater puffers are good for a freshwater 29gal set up. Not all together though:%)
